Náchod District: Culture, Rocks and Trails

Literary history and landscape come together in Babiččino údolí. The educational trail is more than seven kilometres long and has 25 stops; its route may change. The valley preserves a harmonious cultural landscape with remnants of natural vegetation and part of the castle grounds associated with Božena Němcová’s novel Babička.

Literary Landscape and Ratibořice Castle

Guided tours of Ratibořice Castle last approximately 45 minutes. Texts in foreign languages are available, and the exhibition on the ground floor is accessible. As visitor arrangements may change, check the information before your trip. The Bathildina Trail links the castle grounds in Ratibořice with Babiččino údolí; its route may also be adjusted.

Monastery, Garden and Architectural History

Klášter Broumov acquired its present-day Baroque appearance through a renovation in the 17th century. Interactive tours are offered in the medieval scriptorium; the visitor programme may be adjusted. The monastery garden is open to the public free of charge. Check access arrangements before your visit. Bus and train stops are located near the monastery, a useful reference point for getting there; check timetables before your trip.

The Dobrošov fortification system consists of three completed blockhouses and 56 other structures. The castle garden in Nové Město nad Metují is reminiscent of Italian Baroque gardens and includes Art Nouveau elements. The Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was built on Hvězda in the Broumovské stěny, to a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.

Rock Formations and Seasonal Trails

The Adršpašsko–Teplické Felsen are described as the largest and wildest rock city in Central Europe. Conditions differ considerably for winter visits: Adršpach Rock Town is open year-round, and the visitor trail is maintained as far as the Great Waterfall. In Broumovské stěny and on Ostaš, however, trails are not maintained in winter; access is at your own risk. Seasonal access arrangements may change, so check them before your visit. At 773 metres, Božanovský Špičák is the highest peak in Broumovské stěny; there is a marked circular trail there.

Cycling and Getting There

The railway station is right in front of the entrance to Adršpašské skály. A stop is located about 250 metres from the entrance. Check connections before your trip.

The regional cycling network is marked on site and equipped with information boards and rest stops. Most sections of Route 4036 run along paved farm and forest roads; some follow Class III roads. The 31-kilometre Dolní Metuje cycling route connects Josefov, Peklo and Náchod. The orientation cues differ: for Route 4036, the surface is a specific point of reference; for Dolní Metuje, it is the distance and the places it connects.
