Safari and botanical destinations
Safari Park Dvůr Králové includes an African safari where visitors can travel among free-roaming hoofed animals and birds. During the day, knowledgeable talks about the animals are held at selected enclosures; specific schedules may vary. This combines wildlife watching with information about individual species, although talks are not held at every enclosure.
Nearby, the park at the Areál sv. Josefa in Žireč is open to everyone year-round and invites visitors to stroll around the grounds. Conifers and deciduous trees from Asia, North America and South America grow there. The Bylinkárium adds to the plant life with mint, sage, goldenrod and hundreds of other herbs. The Via botanica connects eleven botanically exceptional sites. Those interested in a variety of plants will find several different perspectives here: trees in the park, herbs in the garden and botanical stops along a route.
Walking routes
The circular trail of the Údolím Hartského potoka nature trail starts at the gate of the municipal hospital and is just under 2 kilometres long. Along the way, there are information boards, several play features, a jumping pit and seating by a fire pit. The Městský památkový okruh is similarly short at 1.7 kilometres, but has a different focus: it leads to historically significant sites, including the Davidova hvězda memorial and the surviving remains of the town fortifications in Valová ulička. The lengths are easy to compare; the routes mainly differ in their themes and the stops mentioned.
Churches, collections and bicycles
The Gothic Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. It took on its present form in the 1890s. Kostel sv. Anny houses an organ made in 1829 by Johann Antonín Barth of Dolní Olešnice. It is considered the last surviving organ by this maker that is still playable in concerts.
The Galerie minerálů displays more than 6,000 minerals and gemstones from the Czech Republic and around the world. Its fossil exhibits include complete skeletons of a mosasaur and a plesiosaur. The Expozice historie cyklistiky in Žireč displays historic bicycles from the First Republic, as well as wartime and racing bicycles. Visitors can try a high-wheel bicycle trainer or borrow a rickshaw for a ride through the park. Confirm the availability of these activities locally; seasonal opening information may change and should be checked before your visit.
