Around Jičín District, you’ll find a variety of destinations to help plan your trip: collections on cultural and natural history, castles offering different visitor experiences, and sandstone landscapes crisscrossed by marked trails. You can choose where to go based on your interests—from exhibitions and historic architecture to walks and longer hiking routes.

Museums, History and Fairy Tales

In nearby Jičín, the Regional Museum and Gallery documents the cultural and natural heritage, development and history of Jičín, the wider Jičínsko region and the southern part of the Český ráj Geopark. Its scope therefore brings together local and regional history with natural history. Jičín is also associated with the fairy tales of Václav Čtvrtek and the illustrations of Radek Pilař.

The Municipal Museum Nová Paka covers a different range of subjects: its permanent exhibitions explore geological development, gemstones, volcanism, local history, spiritualism and nativity scenes. The scope ranges from geological topics to regional culture and traditional displays. If you’re weighing up different exhibition themes as you plan your trip, you can compare the two museums by their respective subjects.

Castles with Different Highlights

Dětenice Castle displays weapons associated with the Knights of Malta, as well as furnished rooms with Baroque and Rococo décor. Seasonal jousting tournaments add to the program; as it may change, check the dates before planning a visit. The complex also includes a brewery and a medieval tavern. You can also sample local specialties.

At Staré Hrady, a 14th-century Gothic castle stands alongside a Renaissance castle built later. The visitor experiences cover both historical and fairy-tale themes, and there is also a fairy-tale cellar with sound and light effects. Kost Castle offers four visitor routes: one about the Kinský family, one through the medieval torture chamber, a combined route and a shortened route. The themes and formats are clearly distinct, ranging from a focus on family history to a shorter tour option.

Sandstone, Trails and Views

The Prachov Rocks are defined by sandstone towers rising up to 40 meters. Marked, well-maintained circular trails, information boards and viewpoints provide access to the rocks. For guidance when choosing, there are routes of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 kilometers, as well as a route designed for strollers; parking is available near the entrances. Routes and access may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

For a longer hike, the 16-kilometer Rumcajs Trail connects Jičín with Brada, Prachov and the Prachov Rocks. The Podtrosecká Valleys Nature Reserve offers a different type of landscape: the wetlands encompass ponds and streams in sandstone-lined gorges and provide habitats for protected plant and animal species. The nature destinations therefore differ not only in their trails but also in their landscapes.

Marked hiking trails lead from Jičín to Zebín. The road ends at Zebín Court, about one kilometer from the summit. From the top, views stretch to the Prachov Rocks, Trosky and other local landmarks. The Mariánská Garden, meanwhile, is a Baroque landscape composition: sacred buildings lie hidden in the woods and are connected by old avenues and clearings.

Getting Around by Bike and Bus

For a cycling trip, a longer circular route to the Mariánská Garden starts and ends in Jičín, passing through Staré Hrady and Markvartice. Another route around Jičín connects Valdštejnská Lodžie, Zebín and Milohlídka. The routes differ in their stops and itineraries; choose the one that includes the destinations you want to visit.

Tourist bus route 510 connects Jičín with the Prachov Rocks, the area around Sobotka and Kost. Selected services carry bicycles. As seasonal timetable details and bicycle carriage may change, check the timetable if your plans depend on them.
