Strazne: Nature, Cycling Routes and Mountain Sports
Accommodation in Strazne
Strazne: between nature and mountain sports
If you are looking for a hotel in Strazne, you can plan your trip around the activities that interest you. These include a designated cycling route, a natural monument with distinctive plant life, approved climbing areas and a ski resort. The options cater to different interests and seasons.
Limestone and protected plant life
The “Lom Strážné” Natural Monument is located in the cadastral area of Strazne and covers 4.22 hectares. It protects plant communities that thrive in calcareous, warm conditions and developed on the exposed limestone bedrock after quarrying ended. These include the largest population of the dark-red helleborine orchid in the Krkonoše Mountains. The site’s transformation from a quarry into a protected habitat links the history of its geology with its particular botanical significance.
Cycling route and regional route connections
The 76-kilometre “Krkonošská diagonála” cycling route, designated by the KRNAP Administration, passes through Strazne. The “Za zvonkohrou a pivem Fries” route also runs from Vrchlabí via Mramorový lom to Strazne. The first route can be identified by its length and its designated use as a cycling route; the second is defined by its named locations: Vrchlabí, Mramorový lom and Strazne. The two routes therefore offer different reference points for planning your trip.
Climbing at Hnědé skály and Hranostají skály
Hnědé skály and Hranostají skály in Strazne are climbing areas approved by KRNAP; climbing is permitted there year-round. Hranostají skály lies to the right, beyond a stream, near Hnědé skály. It has around ten protected routes of easy and intermediate difficulty. The approximate number and grades of the routes refer to Hranostají skály; year-round climbing is possible at both areas. Check the applicable parking rules when planning your visit.
Ski resort and seasonal connections
The ski resort in Strazne lies at an elevation of 800 to 1,300 metres. All runs are groomed twice a day with a piste groomer; half are artificially snowed and illuminated. Check conditions for the relevant season before travelling.
The seasonal “Stráženský expres” is an excursion service to the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains and runs every year from 1 June to 30 September. For skiers, the seasonal free ski bus runs daily from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from the central car park in Strazne. Check the current timetable for seasonal services for your travel dates.
Church and mountain pasture farming
The Evangelical Art Nouveau church in Strazne dates from 1904. Mountain pasture farming offers an older point of reference in economic history: it developed in the second half of the 17th century and during the 18th century, producing mainly butter and the famous Krkonoše herb cheese. The two topics highlight different periods in history: the church belongs to the early 20th century, while mountain pasture farming dates back to the preceding centuries.
