Vlcice: Cycling Routes, Nature and Architectural History
Accommodation in Vlcice
Cycling routes, a waterscape and architectural history offer different points of interest. First consider which destinations appeal to you most: a cycling route with a possible extension, protected waters, or the village’s churches and castle ruins.
Planning Your Journey and Routes
Vlčice railway station is on route 040 between Chlumec nad Cidlinou and Trutnov. There is a bus stop for regional services near the station. If you plan to travel by public transport, check the timetable for your travel date, as schedules may change.
The Vlčice circular cycling route can be extended with a climb to Hrádeček, followed by a descent on the road to Mladé Buky. The extension therefore includes both a climb and a descent on a road. The Komenský Route passes through Vlčice, by ponds, across meadows and over hills with views of the landscape. It is considered suitable for more experienced cyclists. The options described therefore differ: a specific extension is mentioned for the circular cycling route, while the Komenský Route connects several landscape features and is described with a suitability rating. Another excursion route leads from Hostinné to Hrádeček Nature Park via Čermná and Vlčice.
Ponds and Protected Nature
The Luční potok v Podkrkonoší Natural Monument also extends into the cadastral area of Vlčice u Trutnova. It protects the population and habitat of the stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium). Brook lampreys and European bullheads are also found in the area. For travellers interested in aquatic nature, these species provide a specific connection to the protected area; they distinguish the nature-focused attractions from the cycling and cultural destinations.
Castles, a Church and Architecture
Břecštejn Castle was built in 1455 by the wealthy Zilvár family on a steep conglomerate rock. It was formerly also known as Silberštejn. Today, only tall walls remain of the castle itself; access is through former cellars. A second castle site near Vlčice can now only be identified by traces in the terrain. It dates from the second half of the 13th century and was discovered in 1974. The two sites therefore differ both in their historical records and in what can still be seen of them today.
The Church of St. Adalbert is a listed cultural monument dating from the late 13th century. Originally Early Gothic, it was remodelled in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The complex includes a Renaissance entrance tower with a rectangular ground plan and two storeys. It stands on the south side of the cemetery wall and contains an entrance gate. A plaque on the façade of the church complex commemorates J. A. Komenský and his stay in Vlčice in 1627. An Empire-style tomb of former estate owners also stands in the cemetery next to the church.
Vlčice Chateau offers another architectural point of comparison: the building has three wings and two storeys, and a mansard roof. Together with the church, which has been remodelled several times, the Renaissance tower and the different castle remains, it presents a range of historical architectural styles that offer insight into the village’s history.
