Chýsky is a district of the town of Chyše and a destination for travelers who would like to include church architecture, a cemetery and a historic Stations of the Cross in their travel plans. At its heart is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Annunciation of the Virgin Mary). It is located on the eastern edge of the town of Chyše, on the gentle rise of Špičák (Spitzberk). When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the locations: the church and Stations of the Cross are in Chýšky; the castle brewery is associated with the area of the town of Chyše.

Church, Architecture and Cemetery

The church has three aisles and two prismatic towers topped with small onion domes. The term “three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles; the number therefore refers to the layout of the interior, not to the towers. The interior layout and the towers with their domes are two distinct architectural features: one concerns the interior, the other the exterior. The names Povýšení sv. Kříže and Zvěstování Panny Marie refer here to the same church.

The church served as the family crypt of the Michna z Vacínova family. Members of the Lažanský family are also buried in the crypt. The cemetery by the church is surrounded by niche chapels; its most valuable gravestones have been restored. The ensemble thus brings together the church’s former use as a family crypt and the layout of the cemetery. The burials in the crypt and the cemetery gravestones are distinct aspects of this place’s history.

The Stations of the Cross with Nine Stone Chapels

In Chýšky, the Stations of the Cross lead from the settlement to the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and consist of nine small stone chapels. At their center stands the Baroque niche chapel of Saint Anne, dating from 1784. The Saint Anne chapel is a focal point along the route, while the church is its destination. The state of preservation varies from one station to another; some chapels are damaged. Take the different conditions into account when planning your route.

Castle Brewery in the Area of the Town of Chyše

In the area of the town of Chyše, the Chyše Castle Brewery produces natural, unpasteurized beer. A brewery tour with a beer tasting straight from the storage tanks can be booked by prior arrangement. Check the current booking conditions when planning your visit, as they may change. If you have a particular beer in mind, ask about the current selection in advance.

Highlights for Your Stay

The church and Stations of the Cross are connected geographically, as the route leads from the settlement to the church; the brewery tour is a separate activity in the area of the town of Chyše. When choosing a hotel in Chýsky, you can therefore opt to focus on the church and Stations of the Cross ensemble or include a pre-booked brewery tour in your stay.
