Falkenau an der Eger District: Culture, Mining and Nature
Accommodation in Falkenau an der Eger District
When looking for a hotel in Falkenau an der Eger District, it is worth considering what you want to focus on during your stay. Destinations range from castle and local history to mining and porcelain, as well as cycling and nature experiences. This lets you tailor your travel plans to your interests.
Buildings and local history
Loket Castle is a royal stone castle more than 900 years old, built on a granite massif encircled by the Ohře River. The building and river landscape are closely connected here: the castle stands on the rocky massif, which the river surrounds.
The first Czech porcelain factory was founded in Horní Slavkov in 1792. St. George's Church is a Late Gothic building dating from around 1520; a Trinity Column dating from around 1700 stands in the square. A circular stone structure from the 16th century is also preserved on Gallows Hill. It bears the town coat of arms and the date 1598. The church, column and Gallows Hill offer different ways to explore local history, while early porcelain production provides another cultural focus.
A Marian column dating from 1701 stands in the Old Square in Sokolov. Nearby, the restored Capuchin monastery complex, with the Church of St. Anthony of Padua and the Nostic family crypt, serves as a concert and exhibition hall. The town thus brings together a single monument in the square and a monastery complex with a cultural function.
Mining history in Krásno
The Hornické muzeum Krásno presents the history of regional ore and coal mining, as well as the history of Krásno and its partner municipality, Bischofsgrün. Exhibits include locomotives and cars used in underground mines and open-pit lignite mines. The museum also includes a demonstration tunnel. The vehicles illustrate two different forms of mining. The museum is located in the Vilém tin mine, which was built during the First World War.
Cycling and nature destinations
Okres Sokolov lies in the Czech part of the Czech-Bavarian Geopark. One recommended bike tour runs from Sokolov to Karlovy Vary via Sokolovské moře, Krudum and Jelení vrch. These places give the cycling theme a specific direction and help you incorporate the tour into your travel plans.
The destinations around Krudum also offer a range of different experiences: below the mountain are the remains of the Late Romanesque Church of St. Nicholas, and an observation tower is nearby. The Moučné pytle natural monument near Cihelny features rock formations and views reached after a climb. The Michal natural swimming area near Sokolov rounds out the selection with a long sandy beach, a water slide and other attractions. Historic remains, viewpoints and rocky landscapes sit alongside a swimming destination—different options to help shape your plans.
