If you are planning a trip to Klein-Werscheditz (Verušičky), you can focus on two interests: the history of its buildings and cycling route 2249. The castle, Renaissance granary, late Baroque chapel and war memorial represent different historical themes and periods.

The Renaissance period: castle and granary

The castle in Verušičky grew out of a Renaissance fortress built by Volf ze Štampachu in the mid-16th century. He also built the Renaissance granary in Verušičky in the mid-16th century. The two buildings are therefore linked not only by their period, but also by their builder. At the same time, the terms fortress and granary refer to different types of buildings, offering two perspectives on the village’s history during this period. The fortress is the origin of the castle; the granary adds another building type to the picture of the Renaissance. The Renaissance granary was completely reconstructed between 2016 and 2020. Its architectural history therefore encompasses both its original construction and its later reconstruction: several centuries separate the mid-16th century from the years 2016 to 2020.

The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity

The late Baroque Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity stands on an inconspicuous hill southeast of Verušičky. It was built in 1740 and solemnly consecrated on October 19, 1740. The year of construction and the day of consecration are thus precisely dated, but mark two different milestones in the chapel’s history. The chapel underwent extensive reconstruction from 2015 to 2022; the work included converting it into an exhibition and concert hall. Its late Baroque origins and its later transformation thus represent two distinct stages in its architectural history. If you are planning a visit or an event, check the latest access and program information in advance.

War memorial: two layers of remembrance

The war memorial in Verušičky to the victims of the First World War was erected in 1920. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was restored and a plaque commemorating the victims of the Second World War was added. The memorial thus brings together references to two wars: its original purpose of remembrance and the plaque added later. The design is by master stonemason V. Hacker of Doupov; he probably also built the memorial. In chronological terms, the memorial is a more recent landmark than the castle, granary and chapel. At the same time, it shifts the focus from architectural history to the remembrance of war victims. If you want to organize Klein-Werscheditz’s historical themes, you can consider these different emphases separately.

Cycling route 2249 and trip planning

Cycling route 2249 runs through the northern part of the municipality of Verušičky. It is paved for the most part; the section between Lučiny and Čínov is gravel. This change in surface is therefore a specific factor to consider when planning your route. As surface conditions can change, check the current surface before setting out. If you are including a bike ride in your trip, you can consider this alongside the historic buildings as a separate focus for your planning.
