Discover Chrastava
Accommodation in Chrastava
Chrastava combines insights into local history with technical monuments and cycling routes. When planning your stay, you can therefore focus on different things: museum visits, the town’s architecture or getting active on one of the routes described here. The sights range from a hand-painted exhibition and collections on the history of firefighting to an Art Nouveau bridge. If you prefer to get around by bike, you will also find routes with clearly stated distances.
Museums and history in Chrastava
The Městské muzeum is devoted to the older and more recent history of Chrastava and its surroundings. The museum includes a mini-gallery that regularly hosts changing exhibitions. Local legends and the town’s past offer a different perspective: Chrastavské sklepení presents both in a hand-painted exhibition and is also part of the town museum.
The Vodní náhon site also highlights the area’s technical past. In 2013, the water channel and the area of an old mill were designated immovable monuments. In 2021, a visitor exhibition was set up on the site in the former area of an old mill. The site is free to enter; you can get the key from the information centre for a deposit of 100 Kč. Check this access information before your visit, as details may change.
The Muzeum historické hasičské techniky displays hand-operated and motorised fire pumps. Its collection includes a wooden pump dating from 1778; the museum is considered the second largest of its kind in Czechia. It is located on Bílokostelecká Street in T. G. Masaryk Park. The collection provides a distinct focus alongside the general history of the town and the technical heritage at Vodní náhon.
Architecture and monuments
Führichův dům was built in 1802 and is a half-timbered monument protected by the state. The second floor houses a small museum about the life and work of Josef Führich. At the Church of St Lawrence, the architecture and furnishings take centre stage: the Neo-Gothic building stands on a low hill above Chrastava and has an original organ.
Technical monuments also include the Art Nouveau metal bridge over the Jeřice, which is protected by the state. A Baroque sandstone fountain dating from 1707 stands in the centre of a square in Chrastava. A nearby Baroque Marian column, dating from 1732, is also known as the Plague Column. These buildings offer contrasting features: half-timbering, Neo-Gothic architecture, Art Nouveau and Baroque forms can be compared at specific locations.
Cycling routes and trips in the surrounding area
The easy cycling tour “PROJÍŽĎKA po památkách CHRASTAVY” is just under eight kilometres long. Another cycling route runs from Chrastava to Kryštofovo Údolí: it is nine kilometres to the village, or 21 kilometres as a circular route returning to Chrastava. The route description lists cycling routes 14, 20 and 21 for this connection; it goes as far as the area below the Hamrštejn Castle ruins. The two route descriptions therefore differ both in length and in whether the return to Chrastava is included in the route.
The third stage of the Stezka Českem in the Liberec area also starts at Chrastava railway station. The Hamrštejn Castle ruins are nearby: from Machnín Hrad station, a 200-metre forest path climbs uphill to the ruins. The remains include the perimeter wall, the remnants of two towers and the walls of the residential building. A hand-operated transporter also crosses the Lusatian Neisse nearby; it is accessible all year round. Check access information before setting out. For birdwatching, there is a viewpoint at Výhledy near Chrastava.
The options range from brief introductions to museums and architectural history to cycling routes of varying lengths and an excursion in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Chrastava, you can use these themes as a guide when planning your stay; specific sightseeing and route plans will depend on the places you want to visit.
