Liberec District stretches from 208 meters in the north to Smrk, at 1,124 meters the highest mountain in the Jizera Mountains. This wide range in elevation gives the region a distinctive landscape. Its attractions include protected natural areas as well as castles, chateaux and cultural experiences. You can shape your trip around a wide range of interests—with nature watching and walks, or with architecture and history as the focus.

Discover the Landscape and Nature

Protected sites include the Čertova zeď National Natural Monument and the Jizera Peatlands, Jezevčí vrch, Karlovské bučiny and Jizerskohorské bučiny National Nature Reserves. The latter is listed as a UNESCO natural heritage site. These names represent different protected landscapes within the district and give nature enthusiasts specific destinations to include in their travel plans.

On the mountain slopes, ski lifts and cross-country ski trails are part of the range of activities, along with hiking and cycling. Individual facilities and conditions may vary. Smrk also has a historical connection: the first lookout tower on the highest mountain in the Jizera Mountains was built in 1892.

For a shorter nature walk, follow the approximately two-kilometer nature trail through the Vesec Valley, which loops around the Vesec Pond. Seven information panels cover wetland habitats and rare or endangered species. Swimming and walking are among the activities described at the pond, locally also called Tajch; the beach is freely accessible. Since facilities may change, it is advisable to check conditions before your visit if you have specific plans.

In addition to the pond and its wetlands, the Great Štolpich Waterfall system offers a striking natural sight: the water plunges 30 meters down a rock face. The region’s nature attractions therefore include both habitats to explore through information panels and a striking geological formation.

Castles, Chateaux and Regional Culture

The region’s focal points also vary. The Český Dub area combines well-preserved folk architecture with Sychrov Chateau. In the Hrádek area, the Kristýna recreation center and nearby Grabštejn Castle offer different kinds of destinations. Frýdlantský výběžek is also associated with Frýdlant Castle and Chateau. Each of these places gives a cultural trip its own distinctive character, offering more than just one kind of attraction.

Grabštejn was founded in the second half of the 13th century as a border fortress and was intended to protect a trade route from Bohemia to Lusatia. In the castle’s Chapel of St. Barbara, murals cover the entire surface of the walls. Visitors can climb the former keep and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape; access depends on the site’s operating schedule. Two tour routes and experience-based tours for children round out the offer. The program may vary by season.

The chateau museum in Frýdlant opened in 1801 and is the oldest chateau museum in Central Europe. Exhibits include a collection of weapons from the Thirty Years’ War and an armory. Lemberk offers other historical interiors: notable features include Baroque stucco decoration, Zdislava’s room, a knights’ hall and a Black Kitchen. There is also a coffered ceiling dating from 1610. These specific details of the rooms and their furnishings offer a glimpse into several aspects of chateau history.

Sychrov is a Neo-Gothic chateau that served as a residence for the French Rohan family. Original furniture and extensive wood carvings define its interiors. The chateau is open to the public year-round. Children’s tours take place in July and August; cultural events, concerts and exhibitions are also part of the annual program. Program availability may vary seasonally.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When planning your hotel stay, it helps to first decide which experiences interest you most. Nature reserves, a pond and a waterfall sit alongside historic interiors, castle complexes and regional folk architecture. Consider which of these themes will shape your trip, and focus your hotel search on locations near the places you want to visit. This makes the variety of Liberec District a practical starting point for planning your own trip.
