Woleschnitz: Culture, Landscape and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Woleschnitz
Woleschnitz (Zlatá Olešnice) combines a distinctive landscape with architectural and local history. The municipality stretches along the slopes beside the Zlatník stream; its upper part lies within the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area. This means that your travel plans can include both nature and winter sports as well as individual historical sites.
A landscape of streams, forests and mountains
The Zlatá Olešnice landscape character area is described as a foothill landscape. Forests and agricultural land, including meadows and pastures, are in relatively balanced proportions. Traditional folk architecture also shapes the area: a relatively high proportion of buildings in this style still remain.
At 826 metres, Javorník is the highest mountain in Zlatá Olešnice. Together with the municipality’s location on the Zlatník and the inclusion of its upper area in the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area, it gives the region a clear landscape character. Those interested in rural cultural landscapes will find a variety of features here: the use of meadows and pastures, as well as the preserved traditional architecture.
Church, manor house and castle ruins
The Roman Catholic Church of St Martin is a protected monument of Baroque architecture and a prominent landmark of Zlatá Olešnice. It was built between 1780 and 1783 by master builder Antonín Teumer. Its location on a steep slope and its tall masonry base are among its striking architectural features. The church thus links local history with a distinctive architectural form.
The small Baroque manor house, Návarov Chateau, stands in the village district of Návarov and is surrounded by an extensive park. Návarov Chateau and its park are protected as a cultural monument. Also associated with Návarov are the ruins of Návarov Castle, the remains of a castle probably founded in the 14th century. Sections of wall and traces of cellar rooms have survived to this day. The manor house, park and castle ruins offer different ways to explore the municipality’s historical heritage.
Antal Stašek and his birthplace in Stanový
The writer Antal Stašek was born on 22 July 1843 in Stanový, in the foothills of the Giant Mountains. His birthplace there is a cultural monument. The half-timbered structure and wooden shingle roof illustrate traditional building methods; the house probably dates from 1765. The local library is also currently housed in the birthplace.
A historical hiking route called “Zlatoolešnicko” leads to the birthplace: it starts at Návarov railway station, follows cycle route 4248a and then takes a green-marked hiking trail to Stanový. If you plan this trip, check the train connection before setting out. The cycle paths through Zlatá Olešnice, including the Járy Cimrmana cycle path, are well marked; check the route infrastructure again before your trip.
Cycle paths and winter sports
The Zlatá Olešnice ski area is located almost in the centre of the municipality. It has a 500-metre red ski run and an easier 750-metre blue ski run. Children can use a 95-metre rope tow. The ski school offers skiing and snowboarding lessons for children and adults. As availability and opening times may vary by season, it is advisable to check before travelling.
The outdoor activities can be distinguished as follows: marked cycle paths run through the municipality, while the ski area has designated runs of different lengths and difficulty ratings. Historical sites and the cultural landscape offer further points of interest. Which aspects you focus on during your stay depends on whether you are more interested in architectural history, literary heritage, cycling or winter sports.
