Jablonné v Podještědí: Culture and Urban History
Accommodation in Jablonné v Podještědí
Jablonné v Podještědí combines a historic town center with religious history, architectural landmarks, and a signposted excursion route to Zdislava’s Spring. Visitors can choose from the basilica and an audiovisual exhibition to viewpoints and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool.
Historic Town Center and Town Walls
The urban conservation area corresponds to the original historic town center. The surviving town walls are fragments of a unique medieval Gothic fortification system dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The system has survived in parts, not as a complete structure.
A Baroque plague column dominates Náměstí míru. It was erected in 1687 in gratitude for the end of the great plague epidemic of 1680. The dates refer to different events: 1680 marks the epidemic, and 1687 the construction of the column. Compared with the medieval fragments of the town walls, it is a much later commemorative landmark.
The Basilica and the Story of Saint Zdislava
The Minor Basilica of St. Lawrence and St. Zdislava is open to visitors; opening arrangements vary by season. Themed guided tours take visitors through the monastery refectory, cloister, basilica, and crypt. A refectory is a monastery’s dining hall, so the tour includes an area of everyday monastic life as well as religious spaces.
The basilica stands above the tomb of Saint Zdislava. For centuries, people have come to this tomb in Jablonné v Podještědí to seek help and intercession. The audiovisual exhibition CESTA offers a different approach to the subject: as a meditative path to Saint Zdislava, it leads through underground passages. Light, shadow, and sounds combine there with quotations from the Bible and the Dalimil Chronicle. While the guided tours include specific rooms, CESTA focuses on a sequence of sensory impressions and texts.
Walking Route, Spring, and Viewpoints
A roughly two-kilometer excursion along a green-marked hiking trail leads from the basilica to Zdislava’s Spring. The spring lies below Lemberk and is a healing-water spring. An Empire-style gloriette with eight Tuscan columns adorns it, adding a distinct architectural feature beside the spring.
The viewing gallery in the tower of the former Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is accessible and offers views of the town and its surroundings. A 2021 municipal description also refers to the former brewery tower as a lookout tower with an information center. Check before your trip whether the tower and information center are accessible.
Outdoor Swimming Pool and Seasonal Activities
At the Jablonné v Podještědí outdoor swimming pool, visitors can swim, sunbathe, play badminton, table tennis, beach volleyball, and skittles, and play mini golf. Opening arrangements may vary by season; check the current opening days before visiting.
