Janův Důl: Hiking Trails, Nature and Local Culture
Accommodation in Janův Důl
Janův Důl combines a landscape shaped by meadows, hills and dense forests with hiking trails, the source area of the Ploučnice and small cultural sites. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: nature and outdoor activities, local history or excursions to the wider region. Your stay can therefore be planned around outdoor activities or a cultural event.
Trails and places to visit
Several hiking trails and marked paths pass through Janův Důl and its surroundings. A red-marked hiking trail leads to the source of the Ploučnice; the K pramenům nature trail is nearby. The source is considered the starting point of the Ploučnice Cycle Route. The source therefore serves different purposes: it is the destination of the hiking trail and the conceptual reference point for the cycle route. Route conditions may change seasonally; check the current situation before setting out.
From the Činkův kopec viewpoint, you can see Janův Důl, Osečná and Ralsko in the distance. In the wider region, Ještěd is one of the destinations to visit from Janův Důl. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by car or by cable car. This range of options offers different ways to get there; check which option is right for you before planning your trip.
Source area and landscape
The nearby Čertova zeď between Český Dub and Osečná is a national natural monument. It protects a horizontally layered basalt dyke several kilometres long. This geological feature adds a specific point of natural interest to the landscape of meadows, hills and forests.
Jenišovský rybník lies right by the source of the Ploučnice and is used for fishing. The landscape around Janův Důl is also suitable for relaxation, for example, mushroom picking. These activities have different focal points: fishing is associated with the named pond, while mushroom picking is associated with the landscape as a whole.
Chapel and local heritage
The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1796, stands within the Camping 2000 grounds. It has been renovated and serves as a venue for social events. The Svatojánská pouť (St John’s pilgrimage) is held at the chapel every year around the end of June. The chapel thus combines a historic building with a recurring community event.
In the lower part of Janův Důl, a memorial cross stands in front of house No. 20. In Zadní Ves, a stone wayside shrine with an image of the Virgin Mary stands beside a path and is known as “U obrázku.” These individual markers differ from the chapel as a venue for events and extend the cultural interest to include religious and commemorative details.
Two factors may influence your choice of travel dates: the Svatojánská pouť takes place every year around the end of June, while conditions on the trails can vary seasonally. If you want to plan your trip around the festival or include trails in your itinerary, check the specific event date and current route conditions.
