Mníšek: Nature and History for Your Trip
Accommodation in Mníšek
There are several ways to plan a trip to Mníšek, with a focus on nature, local history, or excursions. Highlights include the Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area, the Baroque Church of St Nicholas, and the route from Fojtka Reservoir to Dračí skála. When planning, also consider the exact location and the conditions for individual activities.
Landscape and Nature
Most of Mníšek and all of Fojtka lie within the Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area. The area covered differs for the two places: it includes most of Mníšek, but all of Fojtka. If you use the protected area as a guide for your excursions, keep this distinction in mind; the designation does not apply to all of Mníšek.
A protected stand of European yew (Taxus baccata) grows on a slope of Dračí vrch near Fojtka. This identifies a specific nature feature alongside the wider protected area: a particular tree species on a slope near Fojtka. If you are interested in nature, you can include this point of interest in your travel plans without equating it with the entire protected landscape area.
Church and Local History
The Baroque Church of St Nicholas in Mníšek is a state-protected monument. The foundation of the present-day church was laid on June 3, 1739. Its name refers to St Nicholas, its Baroque style identifies its architectural period, and the date places the laying of the foundation in the building’s history. If you are interested in architectural history as well as nature and excursions, the church offers a specific historical point of interest in Mníšek.
Route and Activities at Fojtka Reservoir
The excursion route from Fojtka Reservoir to Dračí skála is 8 kilometers long. The first section can be covered by bicycle and with a stroller. The climb up Dračí vrch along this route, however, is only possible on foot. This distinction is important for planning: the information about bicycles and strollers applies to the first section, not automatically to the climb. If you plan to use either, take the section on foot into account when deciding.
A rock on Dračí vrch is still accessible to visitors today. You can swim at Fojtka Reservoir in summer; the reservoir is also the starting point for the route to Dračí skála. This brings a seasonal swimming option together with an excursion for which a route distance is specified.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
From Liberec, you can reach Mníšek by train to the “Mníšek u Liberce” stop or by bus to the stop in front of the municipal office. These are two differently named arrival points. Choose your connection based on your destination and check current departure times before traveling.
The parking lot designated for cars at Fojtka Reservoir is called “Parkoviště vodní nádrž Fojtka.” If you drive to the reservoir, you can use this name to find your way and check the local parking conditions in advance.
