Chuchelná: Castle History, Museum and Forest Nature

Chuchelná combines castle history with religious buildings, a museum, the Chuchelenský Forest and a cycle route leading to Hlučín Lake. Between parks, regional military history and forest nature, visitors will find a variety of reasons to explore the area.

Culture

Next to the village pond, in a park in the centre of Chuchelná, stands the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross with the Lichnovský family crypt. The chapel is an elaborately designed, Romantic-style central building made of unrendered exposed brickwork. Its crypt contains three restored sarcophagi belonging to members of the princely Lichnovský family.

The Lichnovský Mausoleum was designed and built in 1902 and 1903 by the renowned Opava architect Julius Lundwall. The Castle Park now covers 5.5 hectares; its present form dates from around the middle of the 19th century. Lichnovský Castle served as a hunting and leisure residence. Towards the end of the 17th century, Chuchelná became the centre of a large Lichnovský estate.

The history of church construction is also part of the local townscape. The original Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1921 and 1922 and destroyed during the Second World War. The new Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was designed by Jan Krömer and consecrated in 1996.

History

The Chuchelná Museum has a permanent exhibition on the Second World War from 1938 to 1945. The military history exhibition grew out of the long-standing work of members of a historical and regional studies association who focus on the military history of the region. The Chuchelná Museum displays military uniforms and also includes an accessible air-raid shelter. Visitors can try out guarding a border crossing there.

Nature

The Chuchelenský Forest is known in scientific literature, particularly among geologists studying the Quaternary and among botanists. Montane and submontane plant species occur in the forest, including sedmikvítek evropský, žebrovice různolistá, samorostlík klasnatý, kýchavice zelenokvětá and věsenka nachová.

Cycling

The deep forests around Chuchelná invite visitors to hike and cycle along the regional cycle routes. The Chuchelná–Krzanowice border crossing provides a connection to Poland for local border traffic. The 12.5 km cycle route 6096 runs from the Krzanowice / Chuchelná border crossing via Bohuslavice and Kozmice, joining cycle route 55 before Hlučín Lake.
