Nature along the Morávka
The Niva Morávky Natural Monument covers areas within the cadastral territory of Dobrá near Frýdek-Místek. It protects a stretch of the Morávka as an alpine river, with gravel deposits and the characteristic communities associated with them. Related habitats include ash-alder floodplain forests and oak-hornbeam forests. The river, its deposits and the forest communities are distinct features of this protected natural area.
Because of its scientific importance, which extends beyond the Moravian-Silesian Region, Niva Morávky was included in the Natura 2000 network as a site of European importance. This designation adds a broader regional perspective to the area's specific landscape features: its importance lies both in its stretch of river and in the communities associated with it.
The Profil Morávky Natural Monument protects the gorge-like course of the natural, gravel-bearing Morávka River, with rock steps and rapids. The focus here is on the riverbed's striking formations. Kamenec is a wetland in the Morávka floodplain, with a network of pools and a saline pond adjoining a bog. The natural features therefore differ: Profil Morávky focuses on the river's course, while Kamenec features wetlands and bodies of water.
The Jihlava—Český Těšín cycle route runs along the edge of Dobrá. If you plan to take this route, check its course locally before setting off. Swimming in the Morávka is possible when water quality is very good; check current water and safety conditions before swimming.
Church and architectural history
The early Baroque Church of St. George in Dobrá was built by František Eusebius z Oppersdorfu between 1682 and 1686. The so-called Russian tower was added later, in 1816–1818. The church and tower therefore belong to clearly distinct building phases, separated by a considerable span of time.
The main pilgrimage to the church is also tied to a specific calendar pattern: it takes place on the Sunday after the feast day of St. George. For visitors interested in religious traditions, this recurring date adds a connection to community life to the architectural history. The U Oráče restaurant is a Baroque building dating from around 1720, adding another historical highlight.
