Mankovice brings together religious buildings, park history and landscape connections along the Odra Corridor. Historical landmarks include the Kostel Navštívení Panny Marie church, the Kaplička Panny Marie chapel and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. In Moravských bratří Park, information panels add themes relating to the history of the Moravian Brethren to this heritage. The town’s history can thus be explored through both individual monuments and the course of a historic trade route.

Church and Monuments

The Kostel Navštívení Panny Marie church is the most significant monument in Mankovice. It was built in 1795 to replace an older, dilapidated wooden church. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was placed in 1761 opposite the church, on a small meadow between houses. It is therefore 34 years older than the present-day church.

The Kaplička Panny Marie chapel, also known as Weißova kaple, has been a protected monument since April 19, 2024. There are two possibilities for 1818: the chapel already existed then, or it was being completed at that time. The two buildings mark different points in time: the church’s construction in 1795 is clearly specified, while the chapel’s possible completion around 1818 is set against its clearly dated protected status since 2024.

Moravských bratří Park

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, restored in 2023, became part of the grounds of Moravských bratří Park. The park’s information panels divide the history of the Moravian Brethren into three topics: from Jan Hus to the exile of Jan Amos Komenský, the journey to Herrnhut, and life in the missions and Matouš Stach in Greenland. While the church and chapel are presented through their construction and preservation history, the panels offer a thematic perspective on people, journeys and missions.

The park has drinking water from a restored drinking fountain and an original well. Both are edged with stones from the local banks of the Odra. As their operation may vary, please check whether the water sources are usable if needed.

When the park opened, it was open to visitors around the clock and offered space for recreation and relaxation. If you are planning your trip well in advance, please check the latest access information.

The Odra Corridor and Landscape

The historic Amber Road ran through Mankovice along the Odra Corridor. As an ancient trade route, it connected the Danube with the Baltic Sea. It thus adds a broader geographical context to the town’s architectural and heritage history.

The boundary of the CHKO Poodří Protected Landscape Area offers another way of understanding the local landscape: it begins at Mankovice railway station. Together, the historic trade route and the protected area boundary show two different connections with the landscape: a former transport route and the beginning of a protected area.
