Metylovice: Church, Museum and Pilgrimage
Accommodation in Metylovice
If you are looking for hotels in Metylovice, it is best to start with the reason for your trip: Would you like to explore architectural history, take the traditional pilgrimage to Čupek into account, or plan a route? The church, municipal museum and route information offer different points of reference for your planning.
All Saints Church: Distinguishing construction from consecration
The stone All Saints Church was built in 1577 on the site of an earlier wooden church, in the Gothic style, and was later altered in the Baroque style. Its construction history therefore spans several stages: the Gothic design belongs to the original building, while the Baroque alterations came later. The church was consecrated in 1653 by Bishop Gobbár of Olomouc. There are 76 years between its construction and consecration; these are therefore two different points in time. Protected as a cultural monument, the church offers a concrete historical reference point if you are interested in the development of religious architecture.
Museum and local cultural history
The municipal museum “Kožane město” opened on 7 August 2010 in the premises of a former strap workshop. Compared with the much earlier dates in the church’s history, this is a more recent, precisely dated chapter in local cultural history. The whip from Metylovice is also part of the town’s historical heritage: in the past, it was known beyond the region and the present-day borders of the Czech Republic, and became known overseas as well. This former reach adds another cultural theme to the story of the church’s construction.
Another specific work is the wooden relief “Dřevoryt Cyrila a Metoděje” by the well-known carver Boris Zvada. It offers an additional point of reference if you would like to include named works of woodcarving in your exploration of the town, alongside its buildings.
Pilgrimage to Čupek
Čupek is a popular pilgrimage site. The traditional pilgrimage takes place there on 5 July, the feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodius. This date may be a key factor in planning your trip. If you are planning your trip around the pilgrimage, check the specific programme in advance so you can plan your stay accordingly.
Metylovice–Ondřejník route and access to the summit
The Metylovice–Ondřejník route runs from Čupek via “Metylovice, kostel” to Ondřejník and Skalka. It is considered moderately difficult and suitable for walkers, cyclists and children. You can use the “Metylovice, kostel” bus stop as a possible starting point. Before setting out, check the route against the current trail markings; conditions may vary seasonally.
The summit of Čupek can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by scooter and with a pushchair. This information helps you distinguish the options around the summit from planning the longer route. This gives you different priorities to consider when planning your trip: historical construction phases, a specific pilgrimage date, or a route with a stated level of difficulty and a defined course.
