Rudná pod Pradědem lies in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains and is connected to the main tourism, recreation and ski centres around Praděd. When planning a trip, it is also worth looking at the municipality itself: its two parts have different functions and distinct characters. Nová Rudná is characterised exclusively by recreation. Stará Rudná, by contrast, has the character of a rural settlement with a pronounced residential and commercial-agricultural function. Thus, two distinct local characters coexist within the municipality.

Parts of the municipality and landscape

The northern and western parts of Nová Rudná lie within the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. The protected landscape area is home to numerous protected plant and animal species, including critically endangered species. The location and the information about the species have different scopes: protected-area status applies to the two parts mentioned, while the information about the species applies to the protected landscape area. This helps put the municipality’s connection to the landscape into geographical context.

Gold mining in Stará Rudná

Stará Rudná is connected with the local history of gold mining. Gold was mined here from 1671 to 1742; the towns of Andělská Hora, Bruntál and Vrbno were involved in this mining. The period places the mining in its historical context, while the involvement of the three towns broadens the perspective beyond the municipal district. Another indication of early mining activity is the colloquial name “hornický výval” for the oldest settlement on the Černý potok. It is considered evidence of early mining. Alongside the gold mining, whose dates are specified, the local name provides another point of connection with the history of the place.

Church and Baroque art

The Church of St John the Baptist stands in Stará Rudná and is a prominent landmark of the municipality. It dates from 1655, and original wall paintings have been preserved inside. The construction date places the church in its historical context, while the paintings are a surviving element of its interior. In the centre of Rudná pod Pradědem, there is also a Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk, made in 1744. The church is located in Stará Rudná, while the statue is in the centre of the municipality. The landmarks can also be placed in chronological context: the church dates from before gold mining began in 1671; the statue was made two years after the mining period ended in 1742.

Cross-country skiing in winter

The Nová Rudná–Ranná cross-country ski route is listed as a winter activity. It is 2.3 km long, with 83 m of ascent and 14 m of descent. The distance gives the route length, while the two elevation figures indicate the ascent and descent. This provides several concrete planning details for the trip, each of which can be considered separately. As route information is season-dependent, it is best to check current conditions when planning your winter trip.
