Suchdol Nad Odrou: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Suchdol Nad Odrou
Suchdol nad Odrou offers several distinct themes for a stay: the history of the Moravian Brethren, regional architectural history, local history and nature in Poodří. The Museum of the Moravian Brethren focuses both on life in the Kravařsko region in earlier times and on the exile of residents in the 18th century. Church architecture and the town museum add to this historical perspective. Nature watching and walks also offer ways to experience the area.
Museum of the Moravian Brethren: Everyday Life and History
The Museum of the Moravian Brethren is housed in a preserved small farmstead in the Kravařsko region. The enclosed courtyard is framed by a residential building on the right and farm buildings on the left. Visitors can see how people lived and worked in the Kravařsko region a hundred years ago. This brings everyday life on a regional farmstead to life alongside its history.
Another central theme is the exile of 280 residents from Suchdol nad Odrou to Herrnhut in Saxony in the 18th century. There, they renewed the Unity of the Brethren and founded mission settlements in all parts of the world. This places the town’s history in a broader context, from exile to foundations around the world.
The exhibitions also explore a range of other subjects. The Western exhibition is devoted to Bohumil Kašpárek, known as “Hospodář,” and the history of the Czechoslovak Pony Express. A military history exhibition examines the investigation of aircraft crashes in North Moravia and Silesia, particularly those from the air battle of 17 December 1944. The subjects range from regional history and the Pony Express to military aviation.
Churches and Architectural History
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave late Renaissance building dating from 1605 to 1614. Its defining features include an ornate, Baroque-shaped spire and a double tower finial. The Evangelical Church was built later, from 1852 to 1858 under Senior Szepessy, in the arcaded style and to a design by Viennese architect Förster.
The interior of the Evangelical Church has also retained its original style, including the altar, pulpit, organ and baptismal font. The construction dates and designs set the two churches apart: one is a late Renaissance building, while the other is a 19th-century Evangelical church in the arcaded style. The Baroque Catholic rectory adds to the architectural history; it was built in 1730 to a design by Viennese architect J. L. Hildebrandt.
Town History and Orientation
The exhibition on the history of the market town at the town museum covers prehistory and the region’s first settlement, the Middle Ages, and the founding of Suchdol nad Odrou and the district of Kletné. Other subjects include galena ore mining, the Teltschik family of judges, and the economic development of the originally agricultural community. Railway construction and industrial development are also covered. The town’s history as a market town is traced up to 1945 and includes notable local people.
Visits to the town museum must be arranged in advance and last about 60 minutes. Check your appointment again before your visit. The annual ride of the Czechoslovak Pony Express is another local tradition, alongside the exhibition. It offers a different way to engage with a subject also featured in the museum’s Western exhibition.
Suchdol nad Odrou is an important railway junction on the main Přerov–Bohumín line, with trains departing in five directions. Railway construction is also a subject of the exhibition on the town’s development. The account of historical development and the importance of rail transport thus offer two distinct perspectives.
Nature, Walks and the Oder
Part of Suchdol nad Odrou’s cadastral area lies within the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. With a little care and attention, visitors can observe unique plant communities and rare animal species there. At Kletné, the focus is on recreation and pleasant walks. Along the way, visitors can see the remains of former ore mining and enjoy views across the Moravian Gate valley.
The Oder is another attraction in its own right: it is navigable year-round from Suchdol nad Odrou. If you are considering a boat trip, check the navigation conditions and applicable regulations beforehand. This allows nature watching, local history and boating to be considered as distinct interests when planning a stay.
