Velké Albrechtice: Cultural Heritage and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Velké Albrechtice
Velké Albrechtice lies in a valley on the Bílovka River, southeast of the town of Bílovec. The history of the village is reflected in its late Gothic church, the site of a water castle, and memorials in the cemetery; several cycling routes also pass through the village. If you are considering Velké Albrechtice as a destination, you can weigh historic sites and outdoor activities as two focal points of your stay.
Church and Cemetery
The late Gothic Church of St. John the Baptist in Velké Albrechtice dates from the first half of the 15th century and is listed in the state register of monuments. Its tower contains two bells dating from 1505 and 1508; in 1820, the church received a new vault. The building thus brings together late Gothic origins, bells from the early 16th century, and a structural alteration from the 19th century.
The cemetery wall beside the church has a core dating from the 16th century and is up to three metres high in places.
Water Castle and Memorials
The archaeological site of the water castle is listed as a cultural monument. The pond at the site is a remnant of the former defensive moat. The water castle was probably built to protect a trade route running through the Bílovka valley and fell into disrepair at the end of the 15th century.
A war memorial to the First World War was erected in the local cemetery in 1923. Its artistic design was created by the academic sculptor Engelbert Kaps from Saubsdorf. Also in the cemetery is the Hrobka Sedlnických z Choltic: a wall design with two family coats of arms and eight tombstones belonging to members of the noble family. The cemetery thus brings together a dated war memorial and a family tomb with coats of arms and tombstones.
Cycling Routes and Outdoor Activities
Cycling Routes 6190 and 6011 pass through Velké Albrechtice. Before setting out on Route 6190, check the current signage. The Kolem osmnáctého poledníku cycling circuit also passes through the village. It is 47 kilometres long and climbs 780 metres; the distance and elevation gain provide two different points of reference for the ride. Climbs near Tísek and Čavisov offer views of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and the Ostrava Plain.
The hills above Velké Albrechtice also offer views of the Beskids. On the circuit, however, the aforementioned viewpoints are on the climbs near Tísek and Čavisov; from there, the view also extends to the Ostrava Plain.
The surrounding terrain is suitable for cross-country skiing in winter. In the area, the Setina trout fishing grounds and the waters of Jamník and Bílovka offer opportunities for fishing. Cross-country skiing and fishing are therefore different activity options for planning a trip: one is seasonal and associated with winter, while the other is tied to nearby waters.
Běh Velkými Albrechticemi is a 10-kilometre running event organized by the local sports club. If you want the race to influence your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
