Discover Vendryně: hiking, cycling and local history
Accommodation in Vendryně
Vendryně can be explored through a range of activities and its local history. Topics include hiking, cycling, lime kilns and the Church of St. Catherine. To plan a stay, you can first set out your preferred activity and available time. The circular trails are described as individual half-day hikes or a combined full-day tour; the Vendryně Municipal Memorial Room can be visited by prior arrangement.
Hiking to the Vápenné pece
The Vápenné pece are 2 km from the Vendryně railway stop; a green hiking trail leads to them from there. If you plan to use this trail, check the trail conditions again before your trip. The two restored Vápenné pece offer visitors a way to learn about the history of this area and enjoy some recreation.
Circular trails through Vendryně’s natural surroundings
The “For the Beauty of Vendryně’s Nature” trail consists of two separate circular routes. Section I is approximately 10 km long, and Section II approximately 22 km. Each loop can be hiked individually as a half-day outing, or both can be combined into a full-day tour. The approximate distances and half- or full-day classifications give you different points of reference for planning. Check the trail markers before setting out, as they may change.
Cycling on the Vendryňský kotár
The reconstructed Vendryňský kotár cycling route was officially opened on May 10, 2008, and is marked with information boards. As signs may be updated or moved, check them before your ride. The annual Vendryňský kotár cycling race for the Mayor’s Cup takes place on the route; children and adults can take part. Individual editions may vary. If the race is important for your travel dates, check the dates for the specific edition.
For planning your day, there are several options: the two circular routes are designed as individual half-day hikes or a combined full-day tour; for cycling, the marked route and the annual race are specific points of reference.
Lime processing and local history
The local “Wopiynky” were lime kilns where limestone quarried in Vendryně was processed. Lime processing is therefore a distinct topic in the area’s history, alongside the hiking trails and cycling route. The two restored Vápenné pece offer visitors a way to learn about the history of this area and enjoy some recreation.
Church of St. Catherine
The Church of St. Catherine in Vendryně is a single-nave, masonry church in the Gothic style. The three characteristics describe different aspects: “single-nave” refers to the floor plan, “masonry” to the construction, and “Gothic” to the style. A distinctively shaped bell was housed in the tower; it was probably cast in the mid-15th century by bell founder Hans Freudenthal. In the nearby cemetery of the Church of St. Catherine stands a Baroque cross dating from 1790. The church, the bell’s history and the cross offer different points of interest for anyone interested in architectural and local history.
Visit the memorial room by arrangement
The Vendryně Municipal Memorial Room has irregular opening hours and can be visited by prior arrangement. Make arrangements in advance rather than planning around a fixed time slot. A regular visit lasts 30 to 45 minutes. This information can help you fit the visit into your day as a separate activity.
