Vražné: Mendel’s Footsteps and Local History
Accommodation in Vražné
Vražné combines the history of Johann Gregor Mendel with notable local landmarks and outdoor activities. His birthplace and the Mendel Museum give the village a biographical focus; the Church of St. Peter and Paul, a village school, and other historical sites add to this picture. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on Mendel’s life, local history, or walking and exercise. This also gives your search for a hotel in Vražné a concrete connection to your stay.
Mendel’s Biography and the Museum
Johann Gregor Mendel’s birthplace is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic (Register No. 41981/8-1698). The Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1798–1799. The original village school was in use from 1795; Mendel attended it during his childhood, from 1831 to 1833. In between, he was baptized on July 22, 1822, at the Church of St. Peter and Paul; he was baptized with the name Johann. The birthplace, baptism, and school years thus stand alongside one another as distinct biographical points of reference.
The Mendel Museum features an exhibition about his life and the rural region of Moravian Kravařsko, where he grew up. Several rooms cover genetics and breeding. There is also a gallery with a painted biographical comic and a statue of Mendel on the ground floor. Guided tours of the museum are available by prior telephone arrangement, so plan ahead.
Other Historical Sites
A sandstone cross with a relief of the Virgin Mary is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic (No. 8-4078). The Chapel of St. Florian has a small bell tower dating from 1805 and was restored and consecrated in 1998. Mendel’s horse chestnut tree was planted by J. G. Mendel and his sister Therese; a seating area has been installed by the tree.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
The Poodří Protected Landscape Area extends into the southeastern part of Vražné, while the Odersko Nature Park extends into the northern part. These directional details distinguish the two natural areas in the village: Poodří is to the southeast, and Odersko to the north.
For walks, there is the “Vycházková trasa obcí Vražné” (Walking Route through the Village of Vražné). The outdoor game “Johann” combines a walk with solving coded tasks and introduces Mendel and the places he returned to. It is intended for visitors to G. J. Mendel’s birthplace and tourists in Vražné. The game can be played at any time of year; its route is accessible to cyclists and parents with strollers. The walking route and the game offer different experiences: “Johann” adds puzzles and Mendel-related themes to the walk.
The recreation area at the Pod Emauzy pond has facilities for small-sided football and volleyball. These are two specific ball sports included in the local leisure offering.
