Discover Brníčko: Church, Castle and Routes
Accommodation in Brníčko
Brníčko has two distinct historic attractions: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary complex is in the centre, while the ruins of Brníčko Castle stand on a hill above the municipality of the same name. There is also a hike to the castle and a cycling route that passes through Brníčko. You can therefore plan your stay around architectural history, castle ruins or outdoor activities.
Church architecture in the centre
At the heart of the church complex is an original Romanesque rotunda. It consists of a circular nave, a cylindrical lantern and a horseshoe-shaped apse on the eastern side. This combination gives the building a distinct architectural character: its different forms can be identified as individual elements, offering a precise way to explore its architectural history.
A cemetery with numerous significant funerary monuments adjoins the church complex. Funerary monuments relate to burial and commemoration of the dead, adding another facet to the historic ensemble alongside the church architecture. The complex thus brings together a clearly identified place of worship and a cemetery characterised by its monuments.
Brníčko Castle: structural remains and events
The remains of a two-storey palace, a tower, sections of the curtain wall and the park wall, as well as ditches and ramparts, survive at Brníčko Castle. These structural elements and traces in the terrain offer different perspectives: the palace and tower are individual buildings, while the ditches and ramparts are part of the fortifications in the landscape.
The ruins stand on a hill above the municipality of Brníčko, which shares their name, and are freely accessible year-round. As safety conditions may change in future, it is advisable to check access before your visit.
The Středověké odpoledne (Medieval Afternoon) was held at the castle on the first weekend of July. The 2024 event was the 14th edition; the municipality subsequently announced preparations for the 15th. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates for your travel year.
Local cheese production
Food production is also part of the local scene: the family-run Ovčí statek U Hrdličků in Brníčko makes fresh cheese from unpasteurised milk, quark and matured cheeses. If you are interested in the products or a visit, check the latest information on what is available and the visiting arrangements in advance.
On foot or by bike
The excursion from Lesnice to Brníčko Castle is 10 kilometres long and is expected to take three hours. The ascent and descent are each listed as 289 metres of elevation gain. The distance, estimated duration and elevation gain provide practical guidance for planning your day.
The cycling excursion “Cyklo-výlet za poznáním historie” (Cycling trip to discover history) passes through Brníčko and is 19 kilometres long. The two activities differ both in mode of travel and in their connection to the place: the hike leads from Lesnice to the castle, while the cycling route passes through Brníčko. You can choose whether to make the castle the destination of a hike or to include Brníčko as part of a cycling trip.
Conditions may change on either route, and the cycling route markings may also change. So check the latest route information before setting out.
