Bystrovany: History, riverbanks and cycling routes
Accommodation in Bystrovany
Bystrovany lies in the Haná Plain, about six kilometres east of Olomouc. Local landmarks include the chapel on the village square, a park along the Bystřice, a yellow-marked hiking trail and cycling connections. If you are looking for a hotel in Bystrovany, you can plan your stay based on whether local history, riverside paths or cycling is your main interest.
Local history on the village square
The first written mention of Bystrovany dates back to 1277. At that time, the village belonged to Hradisko Monastery in Olomouc. The Chapel of St Bartholomew stands in the middle of the village square and dates from 1887. A stone cross, also consecrated in 1887, stands in front of the chapel. The chapel had already been consecrated before the cross was blessed. The year 1887 indicates the date of the chapel and the year the cross was consecrated; the chapel had therefore been consecrated earlier.
Commemorations in May and December
Commemorations for the fallen American airmen are regularly held at the cross in May and December. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these events, check the exact date in advance.
An event from 1944
On 18 December 1944, seven American airmen lost their lives near the cross when a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, attacked by German fighter planes, crashed. The incident is a separate historical connection to the area around the cross; it should not be confused with the information about the consecration of the chapel or the cross.
Park and riverside landmarks
At the entrance to Bystrovany, a riverside park lies beside the Bystřice. A tourist information board and a rest area are located by the Bystřička River, next to the fire station. When finding your way around, it is worth keeping the names of the two waterways distinct: the park is on the Bystřice, while the board and rest area are by the Bystřička. This makes it easier to identify the two local spots by their location and the name of the respective river.
On foot and by bike
The yellow-marked hiking trail starts at the Bělidla stop, follows Bystrovanská Street to the Bystřička River and continues along it to a children’s playground. If you plan to take this trail, check the route details locally before setting out. The waypoints follow in order: the stop, the street, then the river, with the playground as the destination.
For cycling, the Jantarová stezka runs upstream along the Bystřice to Bystrovany. There, it connects to cycle route 6103; the Jantarová stezka is also linked to main cycle route 5. The walking route described runs from the stop to the playground, while the Jantarová stezka is notable for its connections to other cycle routes.
Tennis courts at the leisure complex
The Bystrovany leisure, sports and education complex has tennis courts and is open year-round. Information on reservations and prices may change. If you plan to play tennis, check these details before your visit.
