Citov combines historic buildings with paths along the Morávka and lies in the flat, fertile landscape of Haná. There are different options for planning your travel dates: the chateau and park, the town’s history, or a route with stops focusing on nature and exercise. Local events also shape the year.

Haná and the Morávka

Citov lies about 10 kilometres west of Přerov, on the left bank of a river branch called the Morávka. The Hrubý floodplain forest is in the western part of the town, and the Morávka winds along the edge of the forest. This landscape is as much a part of the town’s character as its historic buildings. A walk along the educational trail links several of these themes with information about the history of the chateau grounds and their surroundings.

Chateau, park and historic buildings

The Empire-style chateau in Citov was completed in 1845 as the residence of Tobiáš Pauspertl von Drachenthal. Its architectural details include richly decorated ceiling paintings in delicate pastel shades. A landscaped park designed to harmonise with nature surrounds the chateau and is used for cultural and social events. Its restored eastern, western and southern sections are open to cyclists and visitors; the park is open to the public year-round.

In front of the chateau stands a romanticising statue of a girl from the late 19th century, which is listed as an immovable cultural monument. The watermill and the parish church of St George are also among Citov’s historic landmarks: the mill dates from 1739 and is one of the oldest in Moravia. The church was renovated in 1735 and later extended with an addition behind the altar. A pneumatic organ in Citov was the first of its kind in Moravia at the time; it was built by Neusser of Nový Jičín.

Educational trail and FIT trail

The 1.2-kilometre educational trail runs from the Citov chateau building to a weir on the Morávka watercourse, beyond the mill. Five information-board stops cover, among other topics, the chateau grounds and park, the Church of St George, and the watermill and millrace. One stop also explains the municipal apartment building, which was built after the severe floods of 1997. The weir serves to protect the municipality from flooding.

The FIT trail lies outside the municipality and is about 700 metres long, with seven stops along the route. It follows a paved road beside the historic mill and millrace to the weir. In places, it crosses an older, stony section of a farm track in the direction of Odpadník. At the stops, you will find exercise instructions, diagrams, information, puzzles for children and QR codes linking to instructional videos; the trail is easily accessible. By comparison, the educational trail is longer but has fewer stops than the FIT trail. These details describe the length and number of stops, not the time needed to walk the routes.

A cycling route leads from Citov through Císařov to Rokytnice. It offers another way to extend your stay with an excursion beyond the town; no route length is specified here.

Traditions and events

The traditional Masopustní vodění medvěda (Bear Procession) includes ritual stops, a dance celebration and the ceremony of the “Burial of the Bass”. The Hodové slavnosti (Feast Celebrations) include a church service and fairground rides for children, with family gatherings particularly at the heart of the festivities. Another event for children is the annual Pohádková cesta Hrubým lesem (Fairy-Tale Walk through Hrubý Forest), held before the summer holidays. It uses the forest and field paths behind Citov. If you are travelling for an event, check the exact dates before your trip.

The recurring Odemykání Morávky (Unlocking of the Morávka) takes place at Citov’s mill, on the Morávka watercourse. Together with the local traditions and the themes covered by the educational trails, these offer different starting points for planning a trip: you can plan your stay around history, walking routes or an event date without treating these themes as interchangeable.

Plan your journey

Citov is served by buses. You can also use the railway stop in Brodek, two kilometres away. Check the timetable for your connection before setting off. If you choose Citov as a destination for your stay, the specific event dates and your preferred means of travel may influence your accommodation plans.
