Želatovice: History, Chapels and Regional Setting
Accommodation in Želatovice
Želatovice lies in gently rolling countryside, in a hollow beneath the slopes of the surrounding local hills. At the same time, the town is situated at the transition between Haná and Záhoří. For planning your trip, the immediate terrain and the town’s regional setting are therefore both relevant. Local monuments and chapels are the main cultural and historical attractions, with dates ranging from the first written mention in 1282 to buildings and memorials from the 19th century.
History and Monuments
The first written mention of Želatovice dates from 1282 and appears in a document from Hradisko Monastery near Olomouc. It is an early written record, not necessarily the beginning of settlement. Later records provide other dates: the statue of St John of Nepomuk dates from 1738 and is listed under registration no. 610 in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. A stone cross by house no. 104 dates from 1849; the chapel on the village square dates from 1857.
The village square is home to a monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. A memorial to an individual stands in front of house no. 31: the monument to František Běhal. Its inscription identifies him as a lieutenant in the Czechoslovak fighter air force abroad who fell in the Battle of Britain on 11 May 1941. In Želatovice, remembrance of the victims of two wars thus stands alongside the memory of a named individual.
Chapel and Mass
The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk stands in the middle of the village green, west of the municipal office building at no. 32. It is a masonry building in the Neo-Romanesque style. Style and construction are two different details about the chapel: “Neo-Romanesque” describes its design, while masonry describes how it is built. Since 1993, a Mass has been celebrated there every year on 16 May, the feast day of St John of Nepomuk. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, check current arrangements for attending locally.
Cycling and Event Dates
For cycling enthusiasts, the cycle path project “Želatovice–Přerov, boundary of the Želatovice cadastral area,” completed in 2011, is another local point of interest. Alongside the historic sites, cycling is therefore another way to explore Želatovice.
FC Želatovice organizes the International Youth Tournament “Memoriál Ladislava Němce a Viléma Zbořila.” The 33rd edition took place from 5 to 7 June 2026 at the FC Želatovice sports complex. When planning dates, it is important to distinguish this from the Mass on 16 May: the Mass has been celebrated annually since 1993, while the tournament dates given here apply to the specific 2026 edition. Ask the organizer about future tournament dates.
