Hraničné Petrovice lies in the Jívovská vrchovina in the southwestern Nízký Jeseník, at an elevation of about 580 m. The municipality is part of the Údolí Bystřice Nature Park.

Landscape, Meadows and Birdlife

The area around Hraničné Petrovice is characterized by agriculture and forestry. In addition to the predominantly coniferous forests, there are fields, meadows and pastures, where cattle are raised extensively. The broad, rounded watersheds contrast with the deeply cut stream valleys, forming two distinct types of terrain. Domašovské louky, a significant landscape feature, extends into the municipality. It consists of wet foothill meadows where protected and endangered plant species occur. Legally protected bird species are also found in the municipality, including the black stork, stock dove, sparrowhawk, Montagu’s harrier, goshawk, raven and eagle owl.

Hiking Trails and Navigation

Two marked hiking trails can be distinguished by their routes. The blue-marked trail passes through the center of Hraničné Petrovice between Domašov nad Bystřicí and Huzová. The green-marked trail runs along the western edge of the municipality between Šternberk and Svatý Kopeček. For navigation, the trails’ position relative to the village center is especially useful: the blue trail passes through it, while the green trail runs along its western edge. Their locations and endpoints make it easy to tell the trails apart.

Church and Historic Landmarks

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands at Hraničné Petrovice’s highest point, at an elevation of 590 m, beside the road between Šternberk and Domašov nad Bystřicí. The church is a single-nave building with a five-sided presbytery and a 40 m-high tower on its western side. A single-nave building has one main nave; the presbytery is the chancel area.

The Pietà group was created in 1870 on the old road toward the former village of Hraničné. It bears the German devotional inscription “Schmerzens Mutter bitt für uns” (“Mother of Sorrows, pray for us”). The inscription addresses a plea to the Mother of Sorrows and reflects the group’s religious character.

Petrovická alej is an avenue more than 250 m long, running alongside a field track that leads from the village past the Pietà erected in 1870. It was planted on 23 April 2016 exclusively with native and traditional trees and shrubs. The two historic features date from different periods: the Pietà was created in 1870, while the avenue was planted in 2016. For thematic orientation, Domašovské louky and protected bird species relate to the natural environment, while the church and Pietà relate to the area’s buildings and history.

The Turistická základna includes an enclosed garden suitable for a variety of sports activities. Do not enter the surrounding private properties. If you plan to include the garden in your itinerary, check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.
