Mala Morava between churches and winter cross-country ski trails
Accommodation in Mala Morava
The municipality of Mala Morava lies at the transition between Moravia and Bohemia, between the Hrubý Les, Králický Sněžník, and Hanušovická vrchovina mountain ranges. Two themes can help you get your bearings in this destination: tours through the landscape and historic buildings in several parts of the municipality. When planning, you can use these to decide whether you would most like to discover Mala Morava through its surroundings, a hike, or its local history.
Landscape and tours
From Mala Morava, a climb leads north over a mountain ridge to Králický Sněžník. The tour takes about four hours. This approximate time is a practical guide when deciding how to fit the climb into your travel plans. It describes the duration, not the difficulty level.
In winter, Mala Morava has numerous cross-country ski trails. This offers two different ways to plan activities: the climb to Králický Sněžník can be gauged by its approximate duration, while the trails are specifically for winter. So when comparing activities, you can consider both the time available and the season without treating the two options as equivalent.
Churches and historic buildings
The present-day parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mala Morava was built in 1689. A stone tombstone from 1629 is set into its wall. The dates point to different historical layers: the tombstone predates the church building. This means that one building offers a glimpse both into the history of the structure and an older stone detail.
In Podlesí, the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in 1683 on the site of an earlier wooden Protestant prayer house. The Baroque church is one of Mala Morava’s protected monuments. Also among the protected monuments there is a late Baroque plague column with a statue of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1736. The church and column offer two different examples of how local history is reflected in religious buildings and monuments.
Another construction date adds to the timeline: the Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Vojtíškov dates from 1807. Together with the churches in Mala Morava and Podlesí, it offers not just a look at one building, but a sequence of churches built in different years.
Cultural history in the local districts
In Vysoká, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity houses a museum about Franz Schubert and his family. The chapel is listed as an immovable cultural monument. Its construction history is also linked to a specific name: in 1782, Carl Schubert initiated its construction and contributed financially to it. The museum, monument status, and construction history are different aspects of the same place.
Another historical trace leads to Sklené, where a glassworks is mentioned as early as 1437. This early date adds another aspect of local history to the later church and chapel buildings.
Getting your bearings during your stay
The 333rd kilometre of the Morava is near the turnoff to Vojtíškov; there is a rest area there for passersby and visitors to the municipality. This is a practical landmark when visiting Mala Morava, while the churches, chapel, and historical reference to Sklené each offer their own topics for exploring the local districts.
The Malomoravské slavnosti were scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the football pitch in Podlesí; this event date has now passed. If events are part of your travel plans, check the specific dates for your intended stay.
