Celtic Oppidum of Staré Hradisko
Staré Hradisko is a significant Celtic oppidum near Malé Hradisko, inhabited from the LT-C2 to LT-D1 phases. The fortified area covers approximately 37 hectares and is divided into an inner area and western and eastern outer areas. The period of settlement and the division of the site provide two different points of reference for understanding the complex: its history spans several periods, and its layout comprises more than a single area.
The figure of approximately 37 hectares gives an idea of the site’s scale, while the three named parts provide a clear picture of its layout. Staré Hradisko can thus be viewed as a fortified area comprising an inner area and two outer areas. Those interested in archaeological history will find a tangible point of reference here for Celtic settlement near Malé Hradisko.
Chapel and Monument in the Village Centre
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1845, stands in the centre of Malé Hradisko. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary has been a cultural monument since 1958. Its rectangular plan ends in a semicircular apse. This combination of a rectangular structure and a semicircular end gives the chapel a distinctive architectural form.
A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on a massive masonry plinth in the village square. The restored original is kept in the chapel; a painted plaster replica stands on the plinth. The original and the replica are therefore in different locations: one is inside the chapel, while the other can be seen on the plinth.
Historic Traces in Okluky and Branky
Okluky is part of Malé Hradisko. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary there was built in the early 19th century. Branky, also a part of Malé Hradisko, has a notable stone building: part of it resembles a Dutch masonry windmill. It has not been conclusively established whether the building actually served as a mill. It is therefore important to distinguish between its resemblance in form and its unverified former use.
Another historic trace is Čertův hrádek. Parts of the ditch and rampart, along with the foundations of a round tower, survive from the medieval castle. These individual remains offer a different impression from the large oppidum: here, the focus is on the structures of a castle.
Hiking Trails and Navigation
The Staré Hradisko educational trail starts at the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Malé Hradisko. The 9.2-kilometre Okruh Malé Hradisko circular trail starts and ends on the Staré Hradisko educational trail route at the Celtic oppidum. At first, the circular trail follows forest paths along the Okluka stream. The route therefore has a specific stated length and a described first section.
Near Čertův hrádek in Okluky, a forest path leads to the ruins. A blue-marked hiking route runs nearby, but no marked turn-off leads directly to the ruins. Keep this distinction in mind when navigating, and check the local trail markings before setting out. Also note that conditions on the Okruh Malé Hradisko circular trail may change seasonally.
