Oskava between hiking trails and history
Accommodation in Oskava
Oskava offers several starting points for planning a trip: a landscape shaped by forests and hills, marked hiking trails to Rabštejn Castle, and historic churches and chapels. A large part of the municipality lies within the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. If you are looking for a hotel in Oskava, these destinations and activities can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Landscape, hiking trails and activities
Much of the municipal area is covered by forests and hills, with significant changes in elevation. The Oskava River also flows through the municipality. Marked hiking trails to Rabštejn Castle start in the village of Bedřichov. The castle was founded in the late 13th century and first mentioned in writing in 1318. This combines a specific hiking destination with a place whose history dates back to the Middle Ages.
There are climbing crags with routes of varying difficulty at Rabštejn Castle. In winter, cross-country skiing is possible from there in the direction of Skřítek. The activities therefore vary not only by interest but also by season: the marked trails lead from Bedřichov to the castle, while cross-country skiing is explicitly a winter option. If you would like to travel by bike, cycle route 6032 also passes through Oskava. Check route conditions and signage before setting off.
Fishing is also available seasonally: at the local reservoir in Mostkov and at the private POD TRIANGLEM pond in Oskava. The seasonal aspect is important when planning; the two fishing spots are separate options. This allows you to tailor your stay to hiking, winter cross-country skiing or fishing, depending on when you travel, without conflating these activities.
Churches, chapels and local history
Oskava is home to the parish Church of St. Florian, consecrated in 1785. The village of Bedřichov has a neo-Gothic Church of St. Bedřich: it was built in 1869 and consecrated in 1872. The construction and consecration dates give each church its own historical context.
There are more chapels in Třemešek and Mostkov. The Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua in Třemešek was built in 1887 and reopened and consecrated on June 18, 2016, after restoration. The Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua in Mostkov was consecrated in 1908; its tower, roof and façade were fully restored in 2018. Along with the parish church and the church in Bedřichov, these different dates show how the histories of the individual buildings can be placed in context.
Gold panning and ironworking, which were already practised in the 13th century, appear to have been part of Oskava’s local history. These activities may date back to Celtic or Great Moravian times. The early dating and the interpretations that trace them further back have different degrees of certainty: the earlier attribution remains a possibility.
