Different interests can influence the choice of a travel destination. Pěnčín combines its location on a plateau, a pond that can be walked around, two religious buildings, and cycling routes with a long local history. This allows you to take the landscape, architecture, and local history into account together when planning a stay.

Location and Nebeský Pond

Pěnčín lies on a plateau at an altitude of about 350 meters above sea level, in the southernmost part of the Zábřežská vrchovina. Its settlement layout is shaped like an irregular three-pointed star. Nebeský Pond is in the upper part of Pěnčín, and visitors can walk around it. It is also known as Močilka. It is fed by underground springs, yet has neither an inlet nor an outlet. The plateau setting describes the village as a whole, while the option of walking around the pond applies to the upper part of the village.

Chapel and Church

The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built by the Augustinians in the 18th century. Its floor plan is centrally arranged, with towers added on the west side. The chapel also preserves a bell dating from 1769.

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Pěnčín was built in 1934 and is connected to a family home. In the early 1970s, it received a sgraffito decoration by the painter and stucco artist František Flasar. The two religious buildings have different features: the chapel is described through its floor plan and bell, while the church is characterized by its construction history and sgraffito. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can consider these two different buildings through their specific features.

Services are regularly held in the church at 10:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of every month. If you would like to plan around a service, check the date in advance.

Historical Traces in Pěnčín

The first recorded mention of Pěnčín dates from 1279 and names Ratmír of Pěnčín. Traces of the Lusatian culture have also been found in Pěnčín. From the late 15th to the early 16th century, the village belonged to the monastery of the Olomouc Canons Regular. These stages represent different layers of history: the medieval record of the village, cultural traces, and a later period of belonging to a monastery. Together, they span the period from the earliest mention to the later monastic affiliation.

Cycling Routes and a Boat Race

Two routes associated with Pěnčín are oriented differently for cyclists. Cycling Route No. 6033 starts in Pěnčín. Route No. 5028 runs from the “Zastávka” signpost or junction in Pěnčín to Čechy pod Kosířem. The difference is relevant when choosing a route: for No. 6033, the starting point is given as the village, while for No. 5028, both the starting point and destination are specified.

Pěnčínský utopenec is a boat race on Močilka Pond. The second edition took place on August 16, 2026.
