Postřelmov – Culture, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Postřelmov
Postřelmov combines a location on the plain with distinctive cultural and historical themes. The municipality lies on the route between Zábřeh and Šumperk and has good road and rail connections. If you choose Postřelmov as a destination, you can consider the landscape, historic architecture and regional cultural traditions as distinct themes for your stay.
Landscape and Location
The Postřelmov plain is characterized by fertile fields and meadows and surrounded by wooded hills. The Jeseníky Mountains form the mountain backdrop. The river landscape is also part of the local setting: within the municipality, the Desná flows into the Morava. The plain, hills, mountains and river confluence each describe different aspects of the surroundings.
Architectural History in Postřelmov
Among the notable historic buildings is the late Renaissance family tomb of the Bukůvka family, dating from 1592. It is considered an exceptional monument of its kind in Moravia. Its portal features remarkable relief decoration, as well as a masterfully wrought Renaissance grille. The crypt contains the mummified remains of Zikmund Bukůvka, his wife Barbora Okrouhlická, Zikmund’s nephew Bernard and an unknown girl.
The Church of St. Matthew was originally a Gothic building dating from the 14th century. After the devastating fire of 1665, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Its restored interior includes the main altar of St. Matthew and a ceiling painting of the Last Supper. The church’s architectural history therefore encompasses both its medieval origins and its later reconstruction.
The Procházka Chapel, also called the Chapel of St. Procopius, was built in 1696 on the road from Postřelmov to Chromeč. It was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary; today, it is considered one of the oldest early Baroque chapels in Moravia. When the parish Church of St. Matthew was rebuilt in 1853, services were held in the Chapel of St. Procopius. The two dates illustrate different stages in its history: its construction and its use at the time of the church’s reconstruction.
Another chapel is Kaple Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, a brick building with a square floor plan and semicircular apse. The historic heritage also includes the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a Baroque sandstone sculpture dating from 1732. Jursův statek is a protected historic farmstead dating from 1837. The educator and textbook publisher Jan Jursa, who lived from 1853 to 1938, lived there.
Culture and Regional Tradition
Archaeological finds and folk culture are also part of the local story. During an archaeological rescue survey conducted while the bypass was being built, an artifact was discovered in 2003 that was later named “Postřelmovský Venoušek.” The Markovice folklore ensemble, founded in 1953, draws on folklore from the northernmost part of the Haná region and helps preserve traditional folk culture.
The Postřelmov Cultural Centre hosts concerts, film and theatre performances, exhibitions and events for children. For visitors, the cultural centre thus represents a distinct cultural focus alongside the architectural history and landscape.
Postřelmov by Bike
The “Na kole okolím Zábřeha I.” cycling tour runs from Rovensko through Postřelmov. Just before Postřelmov, you can turn onto a paved farm track that goes around the village to the Chapel of St. Procopius. From there, the route follows Hradecká Street to cycle route 6231 and continues to Postřelmov railway station. Check the current condition of the route before setting out. This connection offers a different perspective on the village from its architecture and cultural attractions: here, the focus is on a cycling route through and around Postřelmov.
