Discover Dřevohostice: Castle, Bell Tower and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Dřevohostice
A stay in Dřevohostice can focus on very different things: architectural history, historic works of art or cycling. The castle, bell tower and Záhorská cycling route that runs through the town give you concrete points of reference for planning your trip.
Renaissance Castle and Earlier Architectural History
Dřevohostice Castle is a four-winged Renaissance water castle. It was built on the site of a water fortress that had already stood there before 1368. The date before 1368 refers to this earlier water fortress, not to the Renaissance castle. This distinguishes two different periods: the predecessor structure on the site and the four-winged Renaissance building. The castle is one of the most significant monuments of the Moravian Renaissance.
In the outer bailey, valuable Baroque statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander stand on high pedestals on either side of the upper gate. The fire brigade museum, which is open seasonally, is also located in the outer bailey. The architecture and works of art define the castle grounds, while the museum adds a subject of its own.
Bell Tower, Bell and Sculptures
The Renaissance Brethren Bell Tower in Dřevohostice has five storeys and is 25 metres high. Its present-day form dates from 1581. The “Maria” bell in the Dřevohostice bell tower dates from 1721 and weighs 685 kilograms. The dates refer to different things: 1581 to the tower’s present-day form, and 1721 to the bell.
Another public work of art stands in Novosady in front of house no. 359: a folk Baroque sculpture of Saint Roch from the second half of the 18th century. Dřevohostice is also associated with archaeological subjects: the Dřevohostice burial ground and the Dřevohostice-type jug are well known in archaeology. The burial ground is also featured on the educational trail.
