Radkova Lhota – Riverside Setting, Landscape and Village History
Accommodation in Radkova Lhota
Radkova Lhota lies on the right bank of the Radkovy, also known as the Blazický potok. Its riverside setting is part of the village’s character; the surrounding landscape encompasses everything from the village and its fields to the nearby Dřevohostický les. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your trip: the rural surroundings, local history or a riding trail.
Landscape between the village and its surroundings
A one-hectare water area was created in Radkova Lhota in 2000. At the dam, the water is five metres deep. In 2001, additional areas covering 0.75 hectares were planted in the forest park; another pond was created and the forest expanded in 2003. In 2004, two field paths were restored, 130 fruit trees were planted and two wooded field strips were established. The water area, trees and paths represent different elements of the designed landscape.
Radkova Lhota is in a sugar-beet-growing region and was once known for its fruit growing. Fruit trees and a well still stand at the former site of Na Větřáku, in the middle of the fields. Nearby is the 310-hectare Dřevohostický les, between Dřevohostice, Radkova Lhota, Bezuchov and Hradčany; it is part of the Natura 2000 network. A seven-kilometre educational trail runs through the forest. If you plan to visit, check the trail conditions beforehand, as they can change.
Village history and buildings
A bell tower stands in the village at house number 15. It was built in 1929 to replace an older bell tower. At the entrance to Radkova Lhota from Radkov stands an 18th-century wayside shrine. The two buildings date from different periods: the bell tower is from the 20th century and replaced an older tower, while the wayside shrine dates from the 18th century.
Radkova Lhota Castle is located on the former isolated farmstead of Lhotsko. It was a hunting and leisure chateau with an extensive park and was converted into a facility for a specific purpose: a care home for older people. The former isolated farmstead, its use for hunting and leisure, and its later conversion represent different stages in the castle’s history.
A watermill was once also part of the village’s history. It stood at the lower edge of the village green near house number 6, on a millrace to the right of the Moštěnka River. The water gradient was apparently slight; neither the mill building nor the millrace remains.
Moštěnka riding trail
The Moštěnka riding trail follows a field path alongside a plum-tree avenue to Radkova Lhota. The red-marked main route ends beyond the village at the JK Radkova Lhota racecourse, where there is a rest stop. The Jezdecký klub Radkova Lhota is active in Radkova Lhota. If you would like to include horse riding in your travel plans, ask in advance about currently available activities and visiting options. Also check the trail conditions before planning a section, as they can change.
