Soběchleby: Church, History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Soběchleby
Soběchleby lies in the Záhorská kotlina, the Záhorská Basin. The protected Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the history of the Brethren school give the town historical significance; cycling route 6137, the Stations of the Cross and the Soběchlebský Š-krpál run offer other points of interest. Visitors to Soběchleby may be interested in local history, cycling or running.
Church and Local History
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1754 and 1770. Its construction overlies the foundations of a Romanesque chapel and a Gothic church associated with the Ladies of Helfštýn. The history of the present building therefore encompasses several construction phases: the Romanesque chapel was followed by the Gothic church, before the present building was erected in the 18th century. As a protected cultural monument, the church is an important reference point for the town’s history.
Another historical thread leads to the Brethren school. It was founded in Soběchleby in 1555. In 1711, the building was renovated and an additional storey was added; two classrooms were added on the upper floor. The school’s founding and subsequent expansion mark distinct stages in its history: the establishment of the school was followed by a specific structural expansion.
The municipal coat of arms also offers a striking detail: it depicts three loaves of bread and two wine knives. Its design, dating from 1752, has been preserved to this day. The motifs on the coat of arms thus add a distinct element of local tradition to the stories of the church and school.
Cycling, Stations of the Cross and Running
The signposted cycling route 6137 passes through Soběchleby and connects the town with Helfštýn. There, it joins the long-distance Jantarová stezka, or Amber Trail, cycling route. The two named route sections can therefore be distinguished: route 6137 runs through Soběchleby to Helfštýn, where it connects with the long-distance cycling route. Before setting out, check the signage, surface and current connections.
The Stations of the Cross route leads from Simře to Soběchleby. A total of 14 crosses were erected along the route in 2019. If you plan to include the route in your itinerary, check its current condition and accessibility beforehand.
The Soběchlebský Š-krpál is a regularly held running competition that was first staged in 2017. Its main route, approximately 11.7 kilometres long, runs through the countryside around Soběchleby; 90 percent of the route follows paved field and forest tracks. Unlike the cycling route, whose details describe a connection to a long-distance cycling route, the run is primarily characterized by its approximate distance and the fact that most of its route is on paved tracks. Route details may change between editions. Therefore, check the current route description before planning a run.
