Discover Sobotín: Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Sobotin
Hiking, nature and industrial history offer three distinct ways to explore Sobotín. The circular trail, Smrčina Nature Monument and the town’s historic landmarks give your trip different areas of focus. Before choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you’d like to spend most of your time outdoors, learn about the town’s history or combine the two.
The Sobotín Circular Trail and Its Stops
The Sobotín Circular Trail is 17 km long and has 14 stops with information boards. They provide information about local history, life today, and the area’s flora and fauna. Some stops have benches. The topics therefore go beyond simply finding your way: the route also takes you past local history and nature-related themes.
Route maps are available at four locations: in front of Motorest Permoník, in front of Motorest Ztracenka, in Rudoltice at house number 133, and at the Klein family mausoleum. Maps are also available from Sobotín Municipal Office. Traťovka is another point of reference, where hiking, cycling and winter cross-country ski routes meet.
Nature and Views
One stop on the Sobotín Circular Trail is about 100 m from Smrčina Nature Monument. The lesser horseshoe bat overwinters in a local tunnel within the nature monument. The proximity of the stop and the animal’s habitat are two specific nature-related features that complement the circular trail.
In the forest section of the trail, you can find the sword-leaved helleborine and the protected Turk’s cap lily. The hills above Sobotín offer views of the Hrubý Jeseník panorama. So, alongside the information on the boards, plants and landscape are themes in their own right. Sobotín also has a rescue station for native crayfish. There, crayfish conservation can be covered in training sessions, excursions and public educational activities; check what is available before visiting.
The Mineralogical Educational Trail also has several access points: Sobotín railway station, Vernířovice Municipal Office with the parking lot by the church, and Sobotín Resort with the parking lot by Motorest Permoník. Check current transport and parking arrangements before planning your visit.
Church, Castle and Local History
The Church of St. Lawrence was built in 1605 on the site of a former Protestant prayer house. An incident at the church was connected with the witch trials, which also claimed hundreds of other victims. The town’s history thus includes both a specific construction date and a grave historical association.
Sobotín Castle was built on the site of an old iron forge. During its reconstruction in the 1840s, it was given a Romantic historicist design. The estate at the time included a castle park, an ornamental pond and several small park structures.
Sobotín’s Industrial Past
The iron industry in Sobotín dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. It included bloomery furnaces, iron forges and foundries. In 1852–1853, when the operation was at its peak, Sobotín became a centre of the Austrian iron industry. The operation, with a branch in Štěpánov near Olomouc, employed 2,000 workers at the time. The development of the iron industry, from its early beginnings to this period of prosperity, can thus be explored as a distinct historical theme in Sobotín.
