Uhřičice: Local History, Baroque Art and Water Engineering
Accommodation in Uhřičice
Uhřičice combines a long local history with Baroque sculpture and technical waterworks. The first written reference dates from 1131; at the Uhřičický Siphon, the Boleloucký Millrace passes beneath the Valová River. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between historical sights in the village and an excursion to a remarkable water engineering structure. When looking for a hotel, you can choose Uhřičice based on which of these interests best suits your stay.
Local History and Baroque Sculptures
The historic center has a broad, linear settlement layout known as an “ulicovka.” The historic area of Uhřičice was designated a heritage zone effective December 31, 2019. The first written reference in 1131, the settlement layout and the heritage designation each offer a different perspective: they provide a historical date, describe the structure of the town center and identify the protection status of the historic area.
The village square is home to a sculpture group of Saint Florian, a valuable Baroque work by Olomouc sculptor Antonín Heinz from 1742. There is also a Baroque wayside shrine on the road to Kojetín, featuring depictions of Saint Florian and the Baptism of Jesus. The two works can be distinguished by their form and subject matter: a sculpture group in one case, and a wayside shrine with two specifically named subjects in the other. Saint Florian links the two works of art, while the Baptism of Jesus adds another religious theme to the shrine’s depictions.
The Uhřičický Siphon and Other Water Crossings
The Uhřičický Siphon is an engineering structure: the Boleloucký Millrace passes beneath the Valová River. The crossing of the two waterways is key to understanding it. Unlike the Baroque works in the village center, the focus here is on the technical conveyance of water, rather than figures and imagery.
From Uhřičice, you can reach the siphon directly via a yellow-marked hiking trail. By bicycle, the structure is accessible via cycle route 5040, which connects Tovačov and Kojetín. The routes therefore differ in terms of mode of travel and their connection to other places: the hiking trail leads from Uhřičice to the destination, while the cycle route connects the two named towns. A stop at the Uhřičický Siphon is also included in the “Po břehu Moravy ke Kojetínu a dál…” excursion route.
Another water crossing on the Boleloucký Millrace is the Vantroky aqueduct in the cadastral area of the municipality of Uhřičice. It lies about 800 meters south of the siphon. The aqueduct’s current concrete channel dates from 1923. The two structures offer different points of comparison: the siphon is notable for the millrace passing beneath the Valová, while Vantroky is another aqueduct on the same millrace, whose current concrete channel has a specific construction date.
The Landscape Around Uhřičice
The landscape includes the Morava and Valová rivers, the Boleloucký Millrace and the Strž, a wooded branch of the Bečva; a flooded area at a former sand quarry; and the Čvachůvka grove with a spring. Intensively cultivated fields are also part of the landscape. Waterways and wooded areas thus sit alongside a landscape shaped both by former sand extraction and by current agricultural use. This natural setting adds further distinct themes to the local history and waterworks when planning your trip.
