Uničov: Urban History, Church Architecture and Views
Accommodation in Uničov
Uničov offers several specific points of interest for a culturally focused stay: an exhibition on the town’s history in a former armory, a late medieval parish church, a preserved town gate, and the town hall tower with its views. Two educational trails add further variety. You can decide whether you are mainly interested in architectural and urban history, or would also like to make time for a walk in the park and an archaeological trail.
Museums and Urban History
The exhibition on the town’s history at Muzeum U Vodní branky is housed in a former municipal armory; the building opened as a museum in 1993. Visitors can explore preserved three-dimensional objects connected with the former occupations of Uničov’s residents. The collection may be presented selectively. Part of the museum is used for temporary art and local-history exhibitions. The Baroque Museum is in the center of Uničov, in a listed building next to the parish rectory. The town therefore offers both an exhibition of objects related to its history and a museum whose name puts the Baroque at its center.
Parish Church and Preserved Architectural Heritage
The parish church of Uničov is a three-nave structure dating from the late 14th century. It was originally built in the Gothic style, with two square towers on the façade. A stone image of a bishop or abbot, probably Saint Procopius, has been preserved in a niche in the spiral staircase. This cautious attribution applies to this particular detail of the church’s history. The tradition of offering candles in the town church is also said to date from the late 15th century. For those interested in church architecture and religious history, both the building’s design and individual historical details are therefore highlights.
Medelská Gate and Views from the Town Hall Tower
Medelská Gate is the only former town gate in Uničov that has survived to this day. The town hall tower also serves as a lookout tower. As you climb, you can enjoy views over the rooftops of the historic town center, the surrounding landscape and the distant Jeseníky Mountains. The clarity of the distant views depends on the weather. If you would like to include the tower in your day’s plans, check current access arrangements in advance, as they may change. The gate and tower offer different highlights: one is a surviving structure from the town’s history, while the other opens up views over rooftops and countryside.
Educational Trails on Foot or by Bicycle
The Městský park Uničov educational trail is 1.2 km long and has the lowest difficulty rating. The Uničov Archaeological Educational Trail introduces important archaeological sites in the town. There are various interactive features at its stops, and the route is suitable even for the youngest visitors. The trails differ in both length and focus: one runs through the town park, while the other explores archaeological sites. A round trip focused on archaeology may also be an option for a spring cycling outing, as the stops are near cycle routes.
Activities in the Wider Area
If you would like to plan activities in the region as well as visits to sights in town, the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area is 8.32 km from Uničov. Possible activities there include hiking, cycling and rafting. The protected area complements the town’s architectural and historical attractions with an outdoor destination. When planning, you can therefore choose between sights and educational trails in Uničov and an excursion farther afield.
