Vilémov combines religious history with a setting surrounded by forests. This offers different points of focus when planning your trip: church and monastery history, as well as views and landscape. The places and dates below will help you plan your stay around specific interests.

Churches and Local History

The Baroque Church of St Catherine in Vilémov was built from the ground up in 1758 on the site of an earlier place of worship. The tower was remodelled in 1908. During the work, the original low roof was replaced by a significantly taller onion-dome roof with a lantern. The two dates mark different chapters: the construction of the church and a later change to the shape of its tower. An onion dome is a bulbous tower roof; the lantern is an additional structure on top.

The return of historic artwork is also part of the town’s history: in 2015, original paintings and sculptures were returned to the church, and, wherever possible, placed in their original locations. After years away, the original Stations of the Cross images also returned.

The reconciliation cross is considered the oldest monument in the municipality of Vilémov. It is estimated to be about 400 years old and bears a relief of a sword on its front. Another landmark in the town’s church history is the Orthodox church in Vilémov: construction began in 1931, and it was consecrated on 14 August 1932.

Monastery and Religious Tradition

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the monasteries of the Olomouc-Brno Eparchy. It was consecrated on 18 September 1993. Visitors can attend evening and morning services; check the service arrangements before your trip.

A 2021 report by the Eparchy describes the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos as an annual tradition and mentions a pilgrimage service and a procession around the church. Exact dates and arrangements may vary. If you would like to take part in the festivities, check the details before your trip.

Forests, Views and Reservoir

Vilémov is surrounded by forests on all sides. At the top of Homola Hill, a rest pavilion offers views of Olomouc and Svatý kopeček. Visibility may vary depending on the vegetation. There is a reservoir in the lower part of Vilémov. If you plan to include leisure activities by the water, check the specific conditions in advance; conditions for recreational use may change.
