Cycling in Džbánov
The signposted Vysoké Mýto–Nové Hrady cycling route runs via Javorník and Džbánov, continuing to Knířov and Vysoké Mýto. The route is about ten kilometres long and of moderate difficulty; for much of it, descents and climbs alternate. This gives you three specific features to consider when planning: approximate length, difficulty and the nature of the route. Distance alone does not fully describe it, since the changing terrain is also part of the route.
In addition, Džbánov’s dense network of paved service roads is used for cycling tourism. This describes a local type of use, whereas the length and difficulty refer to the cycling route mentioned above. Keeping the two pieces of information separate can help you distinguish between the specific signposted route and the broader connection between the town and cycling. Route descriptions may change; check the current route before you set off.
Local History and the Name
Džbánov is believed to have been founded around the middle of the 13th century; the first “official” mentions date from 1292. For the chronology, it is important to distinguish between an approximate founding period and a specific year for the first official mentions. The place name developed from Čban to Čbánov and then to today’s Džbánov.
In the 14th century, Džbánov and its surroundings belonged to Zbraslav Monastery. The old Bohemian noble family Džbánovští ze Džbánova also originated in Džbánov. Its coat of arms featured a red shield with two crossed swords, their hilts pointing upwards; its crest consisted of three silver ostrich feathers. The town’s history can thus be explored through its founding period, name forms, regional affiliations and the origins of the noble family.
Green Spaces and the Townscape
Public green spaces are mainly located in the central area of Džbánov, around a body of water. Numerous mature specimen trees are part of the streetscape. At the edge of the settlement, gardens and designated green spaces form a transition between the built-up area and the open countryside. The townscape described here therefore extends from the central area through the streetscape to the edge of the settlement.
Getting Here by Bus and Train
