Landscape and Location

Horní Třešňovec lies in a valley north of the town of Lanškroun. A prominent geographical landmark is the pilgrimage site with the church of Mariánská Hora: it forms the boundary of the cadastral area of Horní Třešňovec. At the same time, the church stands directly on the European watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea. A watershed separates drainage basins, so water flows in different directions from its opposite sides. Here, the location can therefore be understood not only in terms of a town or valley, but also through a continental geographical divide. If you are looking for hotels in Horní Třešňovec, you could first consider whether this distinctive location or the church and architectural history will play a greater part in your stay.

Church Art and Architectural History

Inside the pilgrimage church is a large Neo-Gothic side altar depicting Calvary. It was made in the late 19th century by the carpenter Jahn from Horní Třešňovec. Neo-Gothic refers to a later revival of Gothic forms; the reference to Calvary points to the tradition of the Crucifixion. Three specific aspects of the altar can therefore be distinguished: its size, its Neo-Gothic style, and its attribution to a local craftsman. The carpenter’s local origins connect the artwork to the village’s history, while its date places it in the late 19th century. The Chapel of the Assumption of Mary dates from 1869–1870. The local Protestant meeting house was built in 1953–1954. More than eight decades separate the stated construction periods; comparing them brings the different historical phases of sacred architecture in the village into focus.

Other Local Heritage

The village’s architectural and artistic heritage also includes other traces of its history. A sandstone Calvary group stands in front of house No. 213. Farmhouse No. 105 is one of the notable examples of rural architecture and has a preserved grain store. These two features represent different forms of cultural heritage: a stone sculptural group on the one hand, and a rural building with a preserved storehouse on the other. A grain store is used to store grain, adding a practical dimension to the architectural significance of the house. House No. 91 also contains a fire service museum. If you would like to include it as a specific place to visit, check in advance whether visits are possible.

Landscape and Routes

Former sandstone quarries lie west of Horní Třešňovec. They add a different aspect to the description of the area than the watershed at Mariánská Hora: here, the focus is on former quarries, while there it is on the geographical division of drainage basins. The two details help distinguish in your mind between the natural setting and a landscape shaped by earlier use.
