Hrádek: Nature and History
Accommodation in Hrádek
Hrádek lies at the foot of the Orlické Mountains. The terrain is steep and hilly, and the surrounding mixed forests provide a habitat for wildlife. The Štěpánka spring emerges from the ground in the green areas around Hrádek. A monumental linden tree stands in what is considered the small village square. Hrádek thus offers both natural landmarks in the greenery and a striking feature in the village landscape.
Landscape and Trails
The local Husí Krk biocorridor runs along the Řetovka stream and offers a walk of about five kilometers, estimated to take approximately two hours. Treat this duration as a guide and check trail conditions on site, as they may change. The approximate duration can help you plan how much time to allow for the walk.
Babí skála, a marl rock face, is located in the left-hand part of the Husí Krk valley. Hrádecké údolí lies below Hrádek and is part of the Orlice Nature Park. A blue-marked hiking trail runs through the section of the valley near Hrádek. The landmarks of the two valleys therefore differ: a stream and rock face in Husí Krk, and the location and blue trail marking in Hrádecké údolí.
Štěpánka is a pleasant place to rest at the edge of the forest near Hrádek. A three-meter descent from a blue-marked trail leads there. If you plan to stop there, check the water conditions and the upkeep of the site in person.
When planning, note that the approximate two-hour duration of the walk in Husí Krk and the three-meter descent to Štěpánka are different kinds of information: one helps you estimate how much time to allow, while the other describes the descent from the trail to the resting place. This lets you account for the time and the descent separately.
Hrádek’s History Across Different Periods
Hrádek is documented in writing from August 29, 1432. The present-day village was founded in 1691 by Jan Bedřich Trautmansdorf. A written entry for the Hrádek mill, Kubasův mlýn, survives from 1544. These dates refer to different milestones: the written record of the place, the entry about the mill, and the founding of the present-day village. If you want to follow the chronology, you can therefore consider them separately: the record from 1432 and the founding in 1691 refer to different historical milestones.
The history of the village extends beyond these earlier dates. In February 1945, a death march involving about 3,000 prisoners passed through Hrádek. This adds an event from wartime to the earlier milestones in the history of the village and the mill.
If you are considering Hrádek as a destination for a hotel stay, its landscape and walking routes may be just as important in your decision as your interest in local history.
