Koldín: Castle History and Trails
Accommodation in Koldín
Koldín combines cultural and historical points of interest with trails that pass through the town. Three topics are particularly relevant when planning a trip: Koldín Castle, the Chlumek fortified site, and options for walking or cycling. Details vary by location, time period, and route length.
Castle History and Fortified Site
The Chlumek fortified site lies in a forest 1.3 kilometres east of Koldín. It preserves traces of a probably rectangular tower measuring about 10 × 9 metres. There is also a ditch up to 3 metres deep and a broad bank that is damaged in places; the landform is well preserved. The combination of tower traces, ditch, and bank draws attention both to individual structural features and to the shape of the terrain.
Koldín Castle dates from the early 17th century and was built near a fortress that no longer survives. A cross dating from 1889 stands beside a chapel. The two references differ in how precisely they indicate time: a period is given for the castle, while a single year is specified for the cross. Together, these two types of historical clues complement the archaeological features of the Chlumek terrain.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The Choceňská naučná stezka passes through Koldín and is suitable for cyclists and hikers. A route description published in 2013 gives a total length of 35 kilometres, two circular routes of 16 and 19 kilometres respectively, and, near Kostelecké Horky, a walking loop of about 3 kilometres. It describes the route as well marked and mentions 19 information panels. Check the current markings and route alignment locally.
The different lengths make it easier to compare route distances in advance: the two circular routes are the longer options, while the walking loop of about 3 kilometres near Kostelecké Horky is considerably shorter. When choosing, you can first decide whether a longer loop or a short walking circuit better fits your plans.
A cycling route from Vysoké Mýto to Sudslava also passes through Koldín. Unlike the loops on the Choceňská naučná stezka, this route names two endpoints. These are different kinds of options for planning: the loops can be compared by length, while the cycling route describes a ride between the named towns. Check locally before setting out to see whether the cycling route is available.
Landscape and Travel Planning
Koldín lies among meadows, ponds, and mixed forests. This adds landscape features to the cultural history and route information. Check local conditions upon arrival.
