Nové Hrady U Skutče: Rococo, Castle Gardens and Museums
Accommodation in Nové Hrady U Skutče
Nové Hrady U Skutče combines a distinctive Rococo heritage with castle gardens and unusual exhibitions. If you are looking for a hotel in Nové Hrady U Skutče, your interests can shape the focus of your stay: castle rooms and history, garden landscapes, or collections with special themes. The sights offer different perspectives—from a tour of historic rooms to a walk among young trees.
Castle and Local History
The Rococo castle in Nové Hrady is a unique building dating from 1777 that has never been altered. The castle grounds are open to the public; guided tours take visitors through the interiors and castle gardens. Opening details may change, so check the latest visitor information before your visit. The castle tour includes the exhibition “The Art of Furniture Through the Centuries.” It showcases Central European furniture design from the Baroque period to Art Nouveau.
The local history can also be traced through a range of architectural and cultural sites. Nové Hrady is home to the Baroque Church of St. James, dating from 1724. A Stations of the Cross in the town dates from 1767. The historical perspective therefore extends beyond the Rococo castle to include other religious monuments as well.
Castle Gardens, Arboretum and Walks
The castle gardens are elegantly designed and feature ponds, cascades, fountains and water-lily pools. You can visit the castle garden independently of a castle visit; check the admission arrangements before travelling. The arboretum, established in 2019, is home to 200 species and cultivars of woody plants. As the collection may expand as the arboretum develops, this figure should not be considered fixed.
You can stroll among young trees along mown paths and take a break in a wooden pavilion. Path and pavilion conditions may change, so take this into account when planning. On the castle hill there is also a children’s playground with benches, a pavilion, a wooden castle for children, a viewing platform and perennial flower beds. The playground equipment may be updated over time. The castle also has a farm where red deer and fallow deer are kept. Visitors can see the animals; check access arrangements before your trip.
Exhibitions with a Character of Their Own
The “Motors & Pedals” museum is housed in a historic Baroque barn and spans three floors. It displays more than 160 motor vehicles, mopeds and bicycles with auxiliary motors from around the world. The collection is continually expanding, so its size may change. The exhibition is accessible only via wooden staircases and is not wheelchair accessible.
The “Gallery of English Hats” displays more than 100 women’s hats in a range of shapes, materials and colours. Visitors can try on some of the hats. The hat exhibition is located in the orangery opposite the maze of clipped arborvitae; an aviary with parrots can also be seen there. As the exhibition venue may change, check the latest visitor information in advance.
Outdoor Activities
The open-air amphitheatre on the castle grounds hosts concerts and performances outdoors. The programme varies; if you would like to plan around an event, check the event details in advance. Riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders are offered at the stables in Nové Hrady. Schedules and booking arrangements may change, so check them before making plans.
