Ostrov is best understood through its landscape and the historical record of the village. It lies in the valley of the Ostrovský potok, below the distinctive ridge of Třebovské stěny. If you are looking for a hotel in Ostrov, you could first consider whether wetlands and ponds or local history better match your travel interests. The topics below range from protected habitats to the oldest written records of the village.

Wetland Habitats and Wooded Slopes

The U Kaštánku Natural Monument is located near Ostrov and Rudoltice, in the cadastral area of Ostrov u Lanškrouna. The protected area covers 22.64 hectares and consists of a mosaic of different habitats: alder, birch, and willow stands sit alongside reed beds and purple moor-grass and sedge marsh meadows. It also includes streams, springs, and pools, as well as some cultivated meadows. The protection aims in particular to preserve habitats for specially protected plant and animal species, as well as to provide comprehensive protection for aquatic, wetland, and meadow communities.

The Třebovské stěny Nature Reserve also extends into the cadastral area of Ostrov u Lanškrouna. It includes an old beech forest on a steep slope, along with numerous marl-rock outcrops and sandstone blocks. Two distinct landscapes can therefore be found side by side: the small-scale wetland habitat mosaic of U Kaštánku and the wooded slope with its rock formations in Třebovské stěny.

The Lanškrounské rybníky Pond Landscape

The Lanškrounské rybníky pond system stretches from Lanškroun to the southeastern edge of Ostrov. The Lanškrounské rybníky nature trail is also part of this regional nature theme: it runs through a nature park featuring a system of seven ponds. These include Krátký, Dlouhý, Olšový, Pšeničkův, Slunečný, Ostrovský 1, and Ostrovský 2. The seven names make clear that the system consists of several individual ponds. Check the current trail signs on site.

The ponds also have a historical connection: the earliest surviving record of the beginnings of fish farming at Lanškrounské rybníky dates from 1433. This presents the pond landscape both as a natural area and as a place with a long history of use.

Local History and the Church

The first written mention of Ostrov dates from 1292. This date refers to the village; the earliest surviving record of fish farming in the ponds dates from 1433. These are therefore two distinct historical points of reference: the written mention of Ostrov and the recorded history of fish farming.

The Church of St. Nicholas, Bishop, is located in Ostrov, in the cadastral area of Ostrov u Lanškrouna. It is a branch church and was formerly a parish church. Outside the holiday period, Sunday services are scheduled every other week. Check the current service schedule before visiting.

For travel planning, there is a clear shift in theme: protected wetlands and the pond system sit alongside the history of the village and the church’s location. If you are looking for hotels in Ostrov, these different points of interest can help you decide how well the village suits your travel interests.
