Rudoltice: Castle History, Church and Routes
Accommodation in Rudoltice
Rudoltice offers several different reasons to stay: castle history, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, walking and educational trails, and the birdlife around Lanškrounské rybníky. When choosing your destination, you can weigh whether your focus is more on architectural history, exercise or observing nature.
Castle History and Buildings
Nový zámek u Lanškrouna, known locally as Zámeček, lies between Rudoltice and Lanškroun. What remains of the extensive Baroque castle of the House of Liechtenstein is a single tower and extensive underground cellars. A guided tour gives access to around 1,000 m² of underground rooms. As information about access to the cellars is older, please confirm access before your trip.
The present-day Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Rudoltice was built from 1804 to 1809. Material from the burnt-out Baroque Nový zámek on Zámecký vrch above Rudoltice was used in its construction. The link between the castle and the church is therefore also part of their architectural history: material from the castle was used in the later construction of the church.
Another work of art-historical significance is the Neoclassical Trinity sculpture group in Rudoltice. The Trinity sculpture belongs to the iconographic type known as the Throne of Mercy and dates from 1802. It is thought to have originated in the workshop of the Mielnický family from Žamberk; the work is also considered a high-quality example of stone sculpture. The religious calendar also offers a recurring event: the annual pilgrimage in honor of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 29 or the nearest Sunday.
Routes, Nature and Getting There
The Fit stezka is an approximately 3-kilometer running and educational trail through municipal forests. Four stations offer strength-training and workout elements; the trail was completed in 2023. There is also an approximately 4.5-kilometer option and an 8.5-kilometer option. The longest route forms a large figure eight that also goes around Lanškrounské rybníky. The options therefore differ both in length and in the route features described. Check local conditions before setting out.
The Lanškroun–Rudoltice cycle path is also a specific route for cycling trips. The landscape also offers a connection with nature. Lanškrounské rybníky Nature Park extends into the northern tip of Rudoltice’s cadastral area. An ornithological observation station is located nearby, at Dlouhý rybník. The Lanškrounské rybníky region is an important breeding area for waterbirds and an important stopover for migratory birds.
For rail travel, Rudoltice v Čechách railway station is a useful point of reference. It provides step-free access to the station building and at least one platform. Before travelling, check the operator’s latest information about the station’s facilities.
