Sopotnice – Cultural History, Landscape and Trip Planning
Accommodation in Sopotnice
Sopotnice brings together a layered church history, named landscape features and a recurring event. This gives you three different focuses for planning your trip: historic architecture, landscape and a specific event date.
The Church of St. Zikmund and its building phases
Kostel sv. Zikmunda was originally a Gothic building from the second half of the 14th century. In the 16th century, the church was redesigned in the Renaissance style, then in the Baroque style in 1712 and in the Neo-Gothic style in 1912. This sequence distinguishes the different building phases: the Gothic origins should not be conflated with the later changes. In 1912, the nave was also demolished and rebuilt to a design by Bóža Dvořák. The Neo-Gothic phase is therefore also associated with a specific structural replacement.
The church complex includes a Baroque square sacristy and a square chapel on the south side of the nave. Next to the building stands a freestanding Renaissance bell tower dating from 1573. Its date falls between the church’s Gothic origins and its later alterations. In Sopotnice, different periods thus stand side by side, although the church and bell tower do not share the same building history.
Other historic features include the sandstone group “Sousošà Krucifixu s Pannou MariĂ Bolestnou” on the south side in front of the gate to the parish complex, and the reconciliation cross “SmĂrÄŤĂ kĹ™ĂĹľ v Sopotnici pĹ™ed kostelem” in front of the church. The church’s structural elements, the freestanding Renaissance bell tower and the two distinct stone objects are different historic features. If you are interested in architectural and cultural history, these distinctions offer a concrete way to explore the town’s history.
Landscape and protected areas
The significant landscape feature VKP č. 75 “Bledule pod Křibem” is located in Sopotnice. Orlice Nature Park extends into the northwestern part of Sopotnice’s cadastral area to a very limited extent. The European protected area CZ0530503 Litice also extends into the northwestern part of the area covered for Sopotnice. When planning your trip, it is therefore useful to distinguish the specific names and their respective locations.
