Velká Skrovnice lies in a gentle valley at an elevation of about 415 metres. The Brodec stream, historic memorials and the bathing pool at Centrum Oáza represent different aspects of the town. For your trip planning, it is easy to distinguish between the main attractions: the landscape, local history and swimming. If you are looking for a hotel, this overview can help you decide whether Velká Skrovnice suits your travel interests.

Landscape and the course of the stream

The shape of the valley and its approximate elevation give you a first impression of the landscape. The Brodec stream rises below the slope near Velká Skrovnice, flows through a pond and continues in the direction of Malé Lhoty.

Early history and historical dates

The origins of present-day Velká Skrovnice are dated to the 13th century; the first written record of Skrovnice dates from 1371. A stone axe hammer found in Velká Skrovnice dates from around 3000 BC, well before the medieval records. The find, the dating of the settlement’s origins and the written record are three distinct points of reference for the town’s past.

Chapel, crosses and stone memorials

The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in 1912. A cemetery was established around it in 1934, 22 years later. A statue of Saint Wenceslas was erected near house No. 70 in 1870; it was last restored in 2019. The stone cross near house No. 19 was erected in 1885 and gave the bus stop “U křížku” its name. Another stone cross near house No. 8 dates from 1862, was re-erected in 1991 and was last restored in 2019. Of the crosses and statue described here, the cross at No. 8 is the oldest. For each of these objects, its erection, re-erection and restoration can be viewed as distinct points in its history.

War memorial and remembrance

The sandstone war memorial in Velká Skrovnice commemorates the municipality’s fallen and missing residents with a stylised soldier figure and inscribed stone plaques. The memorial was renovated in 2024. As part of the work, a new path of sandstone stepping stones leading to the memorial was also laid. Unlike the crosses at individual house numbers, this memorial focuses on commemorating the municipality’s residents. The path and renovation also give the memorial a specific connection to the work carried out in 2024.

Swimming at Centrum Oáza

Centrum Oáza has a filtered firefighting-water reservoir measuring about 25 × 15 metres, where swimming is permitted at your own risk. The measurements give an approximate idea of the pool’s size; for your planning, it is also important to note that swimming is at your own risk. This adds a specific activity—swimming in the pool—to the landscape and local history. You can consider this separately from the historic memorials when deciding where to stay.
