Brod nad Tichou combines local history, distinctive church architecture, and events tied to specific dates. The Church of St James the Greater reflects different building phases; historical years and specific festival dates help place these periods in context. If you plan your stay around history, architecture, or a festival date, these themes offer different starting points for your planning.

The Church and the Townscape

The Church of St James the Greater stands on a hill. The site also includes a cemetery, buildings of the former rectory, and traces of a vanished castle. On the eastern side of Brod nad Tichou, the complex forms a distinctive silhouette and is considered a significant landscape landmark in West Bohemia. Its position in the townscape and its architectural history thus offer two different perspectives on the same complex.

The oldest surviving part of the church is the choir, which was rebuilt at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. The choir and sacristy are Gothic; the nave was completed in its present Baroque form in 1683. The distinction between the building sections helps clarify the chronology: the choir is the oldest surviving part, while the year 1683 refers to the nave’s present Baroque form.

Beside the bridge stands a Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk. It dates from 1738 and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. The church and the statue offer different kinds of historical evidence: one is a building with several architectural phases, the other a single dated monument.

Historical Development and Traces of the Town

Brod nad Tichou developed at a crossing of the Tichá, also called Hamerský potok. The crossing lay on the historic north–south route between Planá and Bor.

Brod nad Tichou was first mentioned as a parish village in 1243. In 1379, it was recorded as a market town with a parish church and fortress. The dates mark two different historical references: the earliest mention as a parish village, and a later description identifying it as a market town with a church and fortress.

Traces of a moat and rampart, along with other unevenness in the ground, remain on the site of the former fortress. They are difficult to make out. This site therefore offers a different clue to the town’s history than the clearly visible silhouette of the church complex: here, subtle traces in the terrain; there, a group of buildings that defines the townscape.
